The New PROBLEM You’ll Have if You Stay at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort

There are SO many hotels to choose from when planning your Disney World trip!

Grand Floridian

Even if you narrow down your list to the options on Disney property, you’ll have dozens of options to consider! From value resorts to deluxe properties, picking accommodations will largely depend on your budget and the amenities you want included. But if you’re considering Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, we’ve got a WARNING!

To share our warning about the Grand Floridian, we’ve got to first discuss its neighbor, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Currently, Disney is in the process of building the new Island Tower at the Polynesian, and it’s set to open in December 2024.

Island Tower construction at the Polynesian

With this new tower, the Polynesian will be getting over 200 new rooms, which means the resort will be upping its capacity significantly. With more people may come more problems, especially if you’re staying next door at the Grand Floridian.

The unfortunate thing for the Grand Floridian Resort is that it’s the LAST stop on the Resort Monorail line before you get to Magic Kingdom. This means that people staying at the Contemporary and Polynesian Village Resorts have already boarded the train, and during busy times, those staying at the Grand Floridian are more likely to have to stand up in the Monorail car.

But we’re concerned that with the Polynesian adding dozens more rooms, that problem will become even more exacerbated. If the Monorail fills up before it gets to the Grand Floridian, will people even be able to get on? We could see this becoming a big issue in the morning before Magic Kingdom opens for the day.

And if you can’t use the Monorail to get to Magic Kingdom quickly, that diminishes one of Grand Floridian’s biggest perks pretty significantly. Thankfully, there are some other options for those who are interested.

The Grand Floridian also offers a walking path directly to Magic Kingdom. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the closest hotel rooms to the front of the park, but it’s fairly scenic and not bad on a day with nice weather. However, it can add quite a few steps to an already long day if you’re spending it in the parks.

The other option that you could consider is the boat from the Grand Floridian to Magic Kingdom. These small boats come pretty frequently but stop at both the Grand Floridian and the Polynesian before heading back to the park to drop off riders. Although, since the Grand Floridian is the first stop, you’ll get your choice of seat on the boat in the morning.

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see how the higher capacity at the Polynesian affects the other resorts in the area, but we’ll make sure to report back when it opens. If you’re staying at the Grand Floridian in 2025, you might want to prepare yourself!
