5 Ride Secrets a Former Disney World Cast Member Wants You to Know

Hi. Former Disney World Cast Member here. Working in Disney World is one of the most unique job experiences out there. You get paid to watch the Happily Ever After fireworks each night. You have the power to make someone’s day a little brighter. Your boss is a mouse. There’s never a dull moment!

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Working in Disney World teaches you a thing or two about the way things really work in the parks, though. For instance, once you see your favorite Disney attraction with the lights on, your perspective is forever changed. But we’re not here to spoil any magic; come with us as we share some Disney ride SECRETS courtesy of a former Cast Member.

If it starts to rain, do not panic.

Central Florida sees more rain each month than many places see over the course of an entire season. It rains a lot. Like, a LOT. But good news: Disney Imagineers knew where they were building when they designed all those popular attractions!

TRON Lightcycle / Run

It’s no secret that a rainy day in Disney World can throw a wrench in your plans. But just because it’s raining doesn’t automatically mean an attraction will close. It’s actually the lightning that causes an outdoor ride to close, not the rain.

Magic Carpets of Aladdin

Once lightning is reported within a certain distance of Disney World, Cast Members will close an attraction out of an abundance of caution. Then, once no new lightning strikes are reported for a set amount of time, it’s safe for those rides to reopen — even if it’s still raining.

Rides don’t “break” as often as you think.

We hear it allllll the time when a ride is temporarily stopped: “Oh great, the ride just broke down!” or “Uh-oh, I think the ride is broken!” The truth is that Cast Members may need to stop a ride to assist with loading, inform a guest to stop whatever they’re doing, or help a guest disembark.

Welcome, Foolish Mortals

Plus, on some rides, if an object falls off the ride vehicle or lands on the ride track, Cast Members will need to stop the ride. What we’re saying here is that if a ride stops, it doesn’t mean it’s broken.

Don’t drink ride water.

The water in rides like “it’s a small world” and Kali River Rapids is NOT for drinking. We don’t need to tell you this, yet it happens. Why? We have no idea.

“it’s a small world”

Hey, we love that classic log flume water smell as much as the next person, but we’re not gonna drink the old theme park ride water. Don’t bottle it. Don’t scoop it. Don’t drink it. OK? OK.

We know LOTS of point hacks!

There are two ways to play Toy Story Mania. 1.) The normal way. 2.) The EXPERT way.

Toy Story Mania

For example, during the Buzz Lightyear’s Flying Tossers game, you can unlock a secret level within the level! In order to unlock a higher score in Buzz Lightyear’s Flying Tossers game, you and your partner need to work together to cover ALL of the aliens in the rocket ship at the SAME TIME.  They can pop back up quickly, so you have to move fast!

Toy Story Mania

Once all of the aliens are down at the same time, the rocket ship will launch away and reveal a giant robot. Shoot as many rings into the mouth as possible — it’s only open for a few seconds! To reactivate the robot, each player must toss a ring over the rockets found on each side of the screen.

Each time you reactivate the robot, the points will increase from 100 to 500 to 1,000 and finally to 2,000!

It’s not easy!

Yes, we can see you, even in the dark.

Thanks to some extra-special Disney magic (a.k.a. security cameras), Cast Members can see everything you’re doing on the rides.

Yes, we can see you.

Even if you’re thinking to yourself, “It’s way too dark for them to see me,” or “There’s no way anyone is watching right now,” you’re probably wrong. Cast Members have seen it all, trust us.
