The Strangest Parts About Disney World

We hate to break it to ya, but Disney World is WEIRD folks!

Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom

Yes, it’s got amazing rides, magical characters, and awesome merchandise. But it’s also got some really strange parts to it. In fact, you may actively participate in these strange occurrences during your visits without sitting back to realize how unusual they actually are.

So, join us today as we explore some of the most STRANGE things about Disney World!

You Pay 💰 to Meet…a Rodent

Okay, yes, Mickey is SO much more than a mouse. He’s an icon, the character that started it all, and a face that likely brings you back to your childhood and happy memories. But at the end of the day, he is also…a MOUSE. Not a fairy. Not a prince or princess. Not a king. He is a rodent. 🐭

HE IS A RODENT

In normal circumstances, what would be your reaction if you were just roaming around your house or a restaurant and a MOUSE popped up? Our guess is you wouldn’t run to it for an autograph and photo. But in Disney? Totally different story. And y’all, that’s just weird.

There Are People in TROUBLE

Guys, there is a man in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride that is drowning in the water?! Carlos! We are SO SORRY! We want to help you dude, but we’re kind of stuck on our slow-moving boat. We’ll…send help?

Poor Carlos

Also, there’s someone at the bottom of this archeological dig near Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular. And we’re all just sitting around pulling the rope and potentially placing his dig (and him!) at risk.

Don’t Pull the Rope!

Should we be calling fire rescue? Do you all need assistance? Yeah, they’re just animatronics or voice effects (we know! we know!), but STILL. A little strange to just walk past people in trouble don’t ya think?

The Trash Cans Talk To You

When you miss a talking trash can or look forward to seeing one, you KNOW things have gone haywire. Sadly, our friend PUSH the Talking Trashcan (yes, we realize how strange it is to call a trashcan your friend) has not returned to Disney World. BUT in 2022, another trash can got a voice of its own in EPCOT and we could not have been more thrilled.

It…talks??

Let us say that again. We were excited to talk to a trash can. And we have a feeling a bunch of other people were too. So yeah, talk to your trash cans folks, cause one of them might just talk back. 😂  (So far we’ve only seen this talking variety pop up in one EPCOT spot — and it could disappear at any time — but you never know!).

You Can Get a Haircut

Ever get to Disney World and think, “gosh, I wish I could NOT ride an attraction right now and instead get a haircut ’cause my do could use an upgrade?” Yes? Well, then Disney is THE place for you! You can actually get a haircut at the Harmony Barber Shop right on Main Street, U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom.

The Harmony Barber Shop

The strange part about this is that getting your hair done can often feel like such a “normal” or “boring” everyday thing, so it can be strange to see that being done in Disney World — a place that’s supposed to be your vacation kingdom. What’s next? Will we be able to go to the dentist in Tomorrowland? Do our taxes in Adventureland? Who knows — maybe Disney could make those things seriously magical too?!

You Can Get a Doll…of Yourself

You probably think of Disney World merchandise and picture shirts, ears, backpacks, and mugs. But what about a space doll? Is a space doll on your list? Oh, wait, not just any space doll…a space doll of YOURSELF as a creature from a different world?

Oh Hello There, Na’vi Me?

Yeah, it’s a thing. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, in Pandora — The World of Avatar, you can actually pay around $80 to experience in the ACE Avatar Maker. This machine will scan your face and then create a Na’vi doll that is meant to look like you. So if you’ve ever wanted to have a doll of yourself as an otherworldly creature staring at you from your shelf when you wake up in the middle of the night, sign yourself up! 😆

People Try to Spread Their Family Members’ Ashes

This is not a joke people. Other guests love Disney so much that they may request to be spread throughout Disney World after their passing so they can “live” in the Most Magical Place on Earth forever — a.k.a. yes, the people in the doom buggy behind you ARE trying to spread Grandma Jo’s ashes in the Haunted Mansion as you sing along to “Grim Grinning Ghosts.”

Now, keep in mind that scattering the remains of the deceased is against state laws and Disney’s rules, so the ashes are typically cleaned up quickly by Cast Members. So the ashes may end up in a Disney vacuum somewhere. Not exactly the final “resting place” the deceased may have had in mind.

Things Are Abandoned

With Disney being a huge company with lots of opportunities to make more money, you’d think every space gets used in the parks. Surely, things don’t just close and then get creepily abandoned right? WRONG!

Source: World Abandoned

Now, it’s not all that common, but over the past years, Disney has abandoned an entire ISLAND in the middle of some Disney World waters, a water park, and a whole partially built hotel. Some of these have later been cleaned up or otherwise transformed into working areas for guests to experience, but others still sit abandoned, like Discovery Island, giving major post-apocalyptic vibes. Let’s just say, not every spot in the Most Magical Place on Earth might be as magical as you think.

You Can Make a Droid and Then…NOT Use It

Picture it — you’re dressed up (within Disney guidelines) as your favorite Star Wars character, you’re walking through Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with blue milk in one hand and a ronto wrap in the other, and all you’re missing is — a little droid to roll around and keep you company! Well, you can build a custom droid of your very own at Droid Depot, but there’s a BIG catch.

Droid Depot

You can’t immediately use it (in the way you might want). You can test out your droid in certain designated areas, but otherwise, Disney’s website warns that “Using a remote-control device to operate a droid while at the theme parks will be prohibited.” Instead, if you want your droid to interact with some of the elements in Galaxy’s Edge, you’re directed to carry it around.

Now, we totally get where this comes from. A bazillion droids rolling all around the parks could cause some serious mayhem — they could get broken/stepped on, they could cause others to trip/get hurt, etc. But it’s fascinating to think that you’ll pay around $120 to build a droid you can’t really use until later.

One of the Most Popular Food Items Is…Waffles?

Waffles. They’re a pretty standard breakfast item. You can find them in the frozen aisle or you can get them at your local Denny’s. When you’re at the Most Magical Place on Earth, you might think that the most sought-after foods would be really UNIQUE things you can’t get anywhere else. And, certainly, a lot of Disney food does fall into that category. But we can’t deny it. One of the items people seriously LOVE and obsess over in Disney World is…a good Mickey waffle.

These Things Have a Cult Following

Now, these aren’t ordinary waffles. They are Mickey-shaped waffles (and they are delicious), so we get the appeal. But still, who would have thought that a seriously popular item at a major theme park with dozens of incredibly talented chefs behind the scenes would be…waffles. 🧇

Between Disneyland Resort and Disney World, the parks can serve more than 3.6 MILLION Mickey waffles each year. So while they might seem basic, you may have a tough time resisting the urge to join this waffle fan club.

You’re Asked to Pack a DEATH Certificate

Okay, for our last one we just HAD to mention the Haunted Mansion again. At the end of the ride, listen to Little Leota who will ask you to hurry back and remember to “bring your death certificate.”

Guests even got commemorative death certificates with the purchase of a ghost jar. Y’all, folks were BUYING GHOSTS WITH DEATH CERTIFICATES. Say that out loud to a non-Disney fan and please tell us their reaction because we cannot even imagine. So yeah, a tiny Disney animatronic encourages you to bring a death certificate the next time you ride and Disney might even sell you an item with one. That’s not something you can usually say about most places.

And with that, we rest our case in proving that there are some seriously STRANGE things in Disney World. Oh wait, we have a few more things to share, like this post about genuinely SCARY things about Disney World, and this video about CREEPY things in Disney World.

Oh and there’s this doll…

Oh Yeah, This Exists Too

…and creepy cupcakes…
