How Do the Action Scenes Compare in Marvel’s Latest Shows and Movies?

Marvel is really going full throttle with its releases after a VERY quiet break after Spider-Man: Far from Home. BUT, we’re back in the game now that a whole slew of new shows, as well as the slate of upcoming films.

Just this past week, we finally saw the premiere of Black Widow in theaters and on Disney+. And, the finale of Loki will be coming next week before What If? arrives later this August. So, how do the films and movies stack up against one another when it comes to their epic superhero action?

Well, The Wall Street Journal broke down all of the action in the recent Marvel releases to compare how these different forms of entertainment build their stories. Oh, and did we mention they keyed into Marvel’s separate strategies by using a STOPWATCH?! Warning: If you haven’t seen Black Widow, there are a few tiny spoilers in here!

In order to see how this film compared to the series, The Wall Street Journal calculated the actions sequences on screen by tallying “any burst of intensity lasting longer than a few seconds.” So, that includes fights, flights, and all that jazz.

While we haven’t had a Marvel movie released in nearly two years (!!!), Black Widow was also the first theatrical premiere since the Disney+ shows debuted too. Black Widow may have included a lot of comedy, family dynamics, and even quiet and emotional moments. But, it still pulled through with the highest amount of action at 34% of the film with multi-vehicle car chases, big explosions, and the grand finale!

Marvel’s first Disney+ series has secured the third place spot with 13.8% of WandaVision that has action sequences (but it could always be taken over with that final episode of Loki). Despite the total runtime of four hours and 32 minutes, the least amount of action we saw in an episode was literally none or 0% compared to the most at 37.6% in the last episode.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has had the most action out of the Disney+ shows with 22.1% action out of the four hours and 25 minutes of runtime. Each of the six episodes have had some kind of action with the least amount sitting at a great 12.2% and the most at 38.6%.

We still have the finale of Loki, so The Wall Street Journal’s calculations only run through Episode Five. But, the show has focused more on building storyline and diverse characterization as there has only been 11% of action out of the three hours and 29 minute runtime so far. The least amount of action in an episode still had more than WandaVision at 4.3%, while the most we have seen has been at 22.2% in the latest episode. But, we’re sure that there will be even more action in the final sixth episode, similar to how the other Disney+ series have operated.

Since the Marvel TV shows work more towards world-building and introducing a whole list of new characters, it’s no surprise that they have less action than the films. But, we have to admit that Marvel is really balancing the scales when it comes to their films and series in order to draw in fans to watch both.
