NEWS: Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’ Had a BIG Opening Day at the Box Office

Marvel fans have been waiting quite awhile for the release of Black Widow.

Black Widow was originally scheduled to be released theatrically in May 2020, and then was delayed twice until setting the date of July 9th, 2021 as a dual release both in theaters and to Premier Access on Disney+ for $30. Now let’s take a look at the box office numbers for this long-awaited backstory of Natasha Romanoff.

As reported by VarietyBlack Widow grossed an impressive $13.2 million in Thursday ticket sales and is expected to earn at least $80 million in the North American box office over the weekend. According to CNBC, Black Widow set a precedent as the highest earner in box office sales for any film released during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Black Widow is the first Marvel film to return to movie theaters after COVID-19 closures and restrictions have impacted the cinema industry. Internationally, Black Widow earned $22.4 million Thursday, bringing the grand total total of Thursday earnings to $35.6 million, according to Deadline.

Box office earnings this weekend may be impacted by the release of Black Widow on Disney+ Premier Access, as many Disney+ subscribers might be more interested in enjoying new movies from the comfort of their own homes. The international box office projection for the weekend is $50 million, and with the domestic earnings expectation to be somewhere between $80 to $110 million, Black Widow might mark a turning point for cinemas.

  1. Sitting in the theater right now. Will never pay DDisney to watch a movie I can see in a theater to watch it on TV for twice as much.
