NEWS: New Musical Will Mix Music From Britney Spears With Classic Disney Fairytales

While there is nothing quite like the classic Disney fairytales, there have also been quite a few successful modern twists on these iconic stories.

Shows like Once Upon a Time on ABC have had success telling new stories of storybook characters and Disney has been creating new spin-off series and prequels, like Cruella, that give Disney fans a chance to see how the stories really unfolded. And, now there is a musical about Disney princesses that will unfold with some recognizable pop songs — and it’s got a Broadway Debut date!

According to USA Today, the Shakespeare Theater Company will be performing a new show, “Once Upon a One More Time,” that mixes pop music from singer Britney Spears with classic Disney princess stories.

The musical is being written by Jon Hartmere and will feature princesses like Cinderella, Snow White, and Ariel and follow their journey after reading “The Feminine Mystique,” which is credited with starting the second wave of feminism in 1963.

The show will feature iconic Britney Spears songs such as “Oops!… I Did It Again,” “Lucky,” “Stronger” and “Toxic.”

UPDATE:

The Hollywood Reporter has shared that this pop star-meets-princess musical will open on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre on June 23rd, 2023. That official opening will follow previews that start on May 13th.

It’s important to note that the show is inspired by Brittney Spears’ music, but she is not known to be involved. The music is licensed through the publishers with approval from songwriters.

In 2019, while still under her conservatorship, Spears did reportedly call the production “a dream come true.” In a statement from that time, she said, “I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs — especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore.”
