Marvel’s next original series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is finally here!
You can stream it now on Disney+ after months of anticipation. The show picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame and shows what life is like in a world with fewer superheroes. But, if you want to be prepared and know what’s going on in the show, there are some MCU films that you’ll need to watch first!
Captain America: The First Avenger
First, you’ll want to watch the first Captain America movie! This movie introduces us to Steve Rogers as a character and tells the story of how he became an American super-soldier. Cap’s legacy is an important part of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s storyline, so you’ll want to be educated on his background.
Plus, in this movie, you get to meet one of the main characters of the show — Bucky Barnes. Bucky has been friends with Steve since their childhood, and this movie shows you what he was like before he became Winter Soldier. You also get an in-depth look at what it was like for both of them fighting in World War II.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Based on the title you probably understand why this movie is so important to the plot of Marvel’s new series. In this film, we not only get a LOT more of Bucky’s backstory, but we also get to meet Sam Wilson for the first time, aka The Falcon.
Throughout Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we see Bucky Barnes mostly during his time working as an operative for Hydra. We learn more about how he was experimented on and what kinds of jobs he was required to do while brainwashed and controlled. Bucky begins to learn the truth about his life and realize just how awful things have been.
Captain America: Civil War
This movie provides significant character development for both Bucky and Sam, as Bucky comes to grips with his past and attempts to move on with his life. We get more details into Bucky’s fractured mental and emotional state after being experimented on for so many years, and fans really start to develop sympathy for the character.
As far as Sam goes, we get the chance to watch his growing friendship with Steve Rogers and learn more about his principles. He stands against the Sokovian Accords with Steve and they have to fight against their own friends for what they believe.
Avengers: Infinity War
Now that you’ve seen all of the Captain America movies, it’s time to move on to the bigger picture. In Infinity War, we find the Avengers broken after their battle with each other, but facing a larger problem. It’s during this movie that we see Sam and Bucky join the big team in the fight against Thanos.
We also find that Sam has been working with Cap and Natasha Romanoff, intent on still trying to help humanity even after the events of Civil War. Bucky has been spending time in Wakanda, getting his mind and body healed after the years of trauma he endured. The events at the end of Infinity War also serve as a large plot point in the new series.
Without trying to give too much plot away, we have to share that it’s incredibly important to watch this movie before the new show! Not only do you get to see the results of an epic battle that Marvel’s been preparing years for, but you also get some important scenes between Captain America and his two friends.
Some of the final scenes of Endgame are the setup for the Falcon and Winter Soldier series. The problems presented at the end of the movie are the same issues that Sam is still trying to grapple with in the premiere episode.
There ya go, those are the MCU movies that are a must-watch before you see The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. If you can watch all of the MCU films, you’d be much better prepared, but if you’re short on time (or just don’t want to watch more than 20 movies before starting the show), then these will suffice.
