Back in February, Southwest Airlines unveiled a preview of its new planes that will be hitting runways in 2025.

However, their announcement did NOT have the response they were likely hoping for, as many people commented on the “uncomfortable-looking” new seats. Nearly a month later, Southwest is responding to the backlash.
The new seats appear extremely slim, too slim, and don’t have enough legroom, according to many customers. One even went as far as to call them “Ozempic seats,” referring to the weight loss medication.

Now, Southwest has responded to the backlash. A representative of the company told ABC News that the “original images were 2D renderings to show the cosmetic look of the seats and were not scalable for illustrating seat comfort.”

The representative followed it up by saying, “But rest assured, we have our customers’ back — even when they give us flak.” Many customers were upset by the design because it went against everything they had been asking for from Southwest.

Many commenters on the original TikTok announcement were also concerned that the new design meant more rows and less legroom, but Southwest has confirmed that “the new seats will still have the same width and legroom as the current ones.”

Southwest hasn’t been having the best start to 2024, it seems, as now the airline is facing massive flight delays and cancelations, and in late December, it was confirmed they’ll need to pay a $140 million fine after their 2022 holiday meltdown that left thousands of passengers stranded right after Christmas.
