We’ve got our festive Minnie ears and we’re ready to take in the holiday decorations and celebrate when Buena Vista Street opens at the Disneyland Resort later this week.

One of the stores that will be opening with Buena Vista Street is Trolley Treats — one of the spots that typically offers Disneyland Resort’s famous hand-crafted candy canes. But, unfortunately, these special candy canes won’t be on the menu this year.
Disneyland has a tradition of making and selling hand-pulled candy canes each year during the holiday season, and trust us when we say these things are a BIG deal! From start to finish, Disney Cast Members work to make these candy canes from scratch. The treats typically measure around 18 inches long and weigh 5 ounces!

The candy canes are usually only available a few days out of the year and fans will wait in enormous lines that start form before dawn just to snag a wristband so they can come back and grab one or themselves! One guest told The Orange County Register in 2017 that “It’s not Christmas until you get your Disneyland candy cane.”

The Orange County Register reports that typically, fewer than 150 candy canes are sold per day, and sales are limited to one candy cane per person. Disney has shared that the tradition actually dates back to 1968, but, unfortunately, that tradition won’t be carried out this year.

According to The Orange County Register, Disney officials have said that the Disneyland candy canes will not be available this holiday season. Disney officials noted that they’l be “unable to facility the production of hand-pulled candy canes by candy makers due to health and safety guidelines, including physical distancing.”

Much like Disneyland’s Candlelight Processional and other holiday celebrations, it appears the candy cane making has had to be canceled this year due to the situation with the global pandemic. But, we are still looking forward to munching on some delicious snacks throughout Downtown Disney for the holiday season.

Hopefully the candy cane tradition can return next year. We’re sure the treats will taste even sweeter and more delicious in 2021 — as they say, “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” With Orange County currently in the Purple tier, there’s still a ways to go before Disneyland Resort can reopen their theme parks, but we’re keeping an eye out for all the latest updates. Be sure to come back for more Disney news.
