Packing for a trip to Walt Disney World and Disneyland can be an all-consuming task, not to mention one of the most exciting parts of preparing for your vacation! From the essentials such as clothes and cosmetics, to those random but oh-so important items like portable phone chargers and the perfect walking shoes, knowing what to pack can make or break your time in the parks.

When it comes to packing, Disney World and Disneyland largely have the same requirements. Comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen are a must regardless of which resort you’re heading to, plus you’ll want to pack your favorite Minnie ears no matter which coast you frequent.

But there’s one major difference to consider — and it’s a biggie.
It may come as no surprise that it can rain quite a bit in Central Florida. The weather is something you will definitely need to plan and prepare for when traveling to Disney World. Disneyland, on the other hand, experiences much of the same weather throughout the year — and typically does not get nearly the same amount of rain.

So how does this change your packing strategy? If you’ve only vacationed to Disneyland, you may not be used to designating suitcase space for your umbrella and other gear. Basic rain gear could include ponchos, umbrellas, water-resistant shoes and outerwear, and stroller covers. Chances are you’ll need to pull some of these items out at least once on your trip to Disney World, perhaps daily if you’re traveling during the summer months.

PRO TIP: Buy these rainy day essentials BEFORE you leave for Disney World (hence why you’ll need to leave space to pack them in your suitcase)! While items such as ponchos are available for purchase in the parks and resorts, they are much cheaper if you order them online or pick them up in your favorite big box store ahead of time.

All of that said, despite California’s reputation for ‘picture perfect’ sunny weather year-round, it can also rain, especially during the winter months of January and February. It can also rain through the spring, but heavy rain is much less common as you progress into the calendar year. If you’re traveling to Disneyland in the winter, double check the forecast before you leave home, and that should give you a good idea of what to expect for weather.
