If it feels like almost everything is under construction in Disney World, well, it kind of is! There’s major construction happening in three of Disney World’s four theme parks, as well as at several Disney World hotels.

Well, add Typhoon Lagoon water park to the construction list because Disney just filed a permit to work on one of the attractions there.
A Notice of Commencement was filed by Disney World on January 7th for the Humunga Kowabunga attraction at Typhoon Lagoon. This attraction features three side-by-side body slides that plunge 214 feet in a near-vertical drop at a speed up to 30 mph. The permit is for “general construction,” so it looks like the ride is getting an update of some kind.

ProSlide Technology is listed on the permit as the contractor. This company specializes in water ride design. There’s no indication of what kind of work will be done on the slide, but it will probably begin when Typhoon Lagoon closes for the season on February 15th.
Disney also noted that both water parks will be open by May 26th, just in time for the water park perk to restart for Disney World hotel guests. Read all about the perk and if it’s worth it for you here.

Humunga Cowabunga has been previously cited in several lawsuits against Disney due to injuries guests claim they sustained while on the attraction. Now, we don’t know if this construction has anything to do with adding additional safety features to the ride or not, but it’s possible this is something Disney is looking into.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for updates to see what might be happening over at the ride and in Typhoon Lagoon during its seasonal closure, which will also likely include maintenance and refurbishment of other rides in the water park. So be sure to check back with AllEars again soon for more.
