My editor told me I was wearing Walmart sneakers to Disney World to test them out, and honestly, I thought this was going to be the end of me.

But this is my life now — wandering around Disney World testing every bizarre, questionable, brilliant, and occasionally chaotic item she throws at me so you don’t make tragic packing mistakes on your next trip. From rain ponchos that DON’T feel like trash bags to gadgets no one asked for, I’ve tested the good, the bad, and the “what in the world?” all in the name of helping you survive your next Disney World vacation. So when she sent me my next product assignment and said, “Wear these to Disney World,” I took a deep breath… and stepped into my destiny.
When my editor told me I’d be wearing Walmart sneakers to Disney World, I honestly thought I was being punished. Like, maybe I missed a meeting. Maybe I sent the wrong emoji in Slack. Maybe I angered the algorithm gods. But no — this was intentional. “You’re going to test these,” she said, sending me a pair of AVIA Women’s Running Shoes — yes, the Walmart brand. When they arrived at my doorstep, holding the entire shoe felt lighter than the anxiety I was feeling about the journey I was about to embark on, and I immediately hoped she was kidding.

Ever since I’ve been testing shoes for our readers, I’ve discovered if I’m going to wear shoes, I’m a HOKA girl — a “pay the premium because comfort matters” girl. So the idea of wearing Walmart shoes all day around Disney World felt like volunteering to run a marathon in wooden clogs.

But I did it — I wore the budget shoes for science. And also because my editor told me to, and to OUR surprise, I can’t say I totally hated them. Here’s exactly how it ALL went!
Stage 1: Denial (a.k.a. Putting Them On For The First Time)
I slid my foot into the AVIA sneaker, expecting my toes to scream like they were in a horror movie. Shockingly…they didn’t. The inside was actually bouncy. Like, trampoline bouncy. Like, “Did Walmart hide a gel cloud in here?” bouncy.

The heel had this cushioned spring that felt surprisingly supportive. The shoe hugged my foot slim and secure.

But then the doubts crept in. “Isn’t this too narrow at the toe?” “Is this softness going to disappear the second I start walking?” “What if they fall apart at Small World and I have to finish the day barefoot?” Well, folks, there was only one way we were going to find out.
Stage 2: Acceptance (a.k.a. Walking Into Magic Kingdom)
Seven minutes into Main Street, I realized something: these shoes…were actually great. They didn’t rub, they didn’t pinch. They didn’t immediately betray me like I fully expected them to. And as I kept walking from one side of the park, back to the other, and every other direction in between, they started molding to my feet.

Not kidding. They softened, adapted, and basically said, “We know you doubted us, but we choose forgiveness.” That kind of comfort? Huge win.
Stage 3: Betrayal (a.k.a. The One Thing I Didn’t Love)
Okay, listen. These are NOT “buy today, wear at Disney tomorrow” shoes. They need to be broken in, even just a little. The toe box is narrow, and if you’re someone who needs wiggle room or has wider feet, the first hour may feel like your toes are writing angry Yelp reviews about your life choices.

Once they warmed up and softened, though? Totally wearable. But yeah…don’t do what I did and go straight outta the box to park. Your heels deserve better, people!
Stage 4: Revelation (a.k.a. The Moment I Realized They Might Be…Good?)
By midday, I had a horrifying thought. “They feel kind of like my HOKA Clifton 10s,” I admitted in amazement to myself. Not identical, okay? Let’s not blaspheme. But shockingly close in terms of bounce and cushioned heel support.
The glaringly obvious difference is that these cost significantly less than the small fortune you may be considering dropping on your next pair of HOKAs.

The AVIA shoes held up through rope drop speed-walking, standing in line with no shade, dodging stroller traffic, and the emotional weight of waiting for the monorail. They. Did. Not. Quit.
Stage 5: Devotion (a.k.a. Would I Buy Them?)
YES. Yes, yes, aggressively yes. In fact, I’m pretty sure they’re exactly the thing Olivia Newton-John was thinking about when she recorded “Hopelessly Devoted (To You),” but maybe I’m just being a little dramatic.
In complete seriousness, I would absolutely spend my own money on these. In fact, I already plan to buy pairs for my daughters because they’re cheap, durable, and honestly way better than I expected a Walmart sneaker to be.

They met all my requirements in price, durability, comfort, brand reliability (shocker), and actual real-world performance. They exceeded my expectations in a way my therapist would call “growth.”
Stage 6: Closure (a.k.a. The Final Verdict)
If it’s not clear by now, these shoes get a raving review (5 out of 5), and I can’t believe I’m saying that!

If you need a budget-friendly sneaker for Disney World, running errands, or just walking around the neighborhood, the AVIA Women’s Running Shoe is absolutely worth it. Just break them in first!
And if your editor ever hands you a challenge disguised as Walmart footwear?
