Should You Check Out of Your Disney World Hotel, or Just Leave?

We’ve logged countless stays at Disney World hotels, so it’s safe to say we’ve become experts over the years. That’s why we feel the need to share this check-out tip with ya!

Polynesian Village Resort

After a memorable and joyfully exhausting Disney World, departure day inevitably arrives, sadly. You pack everything up, take mental snapshots to preserve the Disney magic just a little longer, and then stand awkwardly in your asking yourself, “Now what?” Of course, it’s check-out time, and you can either go through the proper channels or simply leave. If you choose to do the latter, there are a few things you should know…

In most cases, you really can just leave once it’s time to check out. However,  depending on your payment method, special circumstances, and plans for later on in the day, there are times when “just leaving” your hotel ISN’T the right call.

Check with a Cast Member if you have any questions!

Disney World uses “automatic checkout”/”express checkout” for its hotel guests. This process closes out your stay and deactivates your room key automatically at 11 AM using the card you have on file in your My Disney Experience account. It will then email you a copy of your receipt, and that’s really all there is to it.

It makes sense — most hotel chains are incredibly forgiving when it comes to their checkout policies and do not require desk visits.

Yacht Club Resort Bell Services

The main thing before just leaving is to go into the My Disney Experience app and verify the following:

  • No room balance questions
  • No last-minute charges
  • No reservation complications

If any of these pop up, definitely visit the front desk. Otherwise, Disney is totally cool with you heading out without saying a word. You don’t even need to turn room keys in if you don’t want to!

Commemorative Room Key

Still, it’s sometimes worth it to stop by the front desk anyway. If you used gift cards, Disney Rewards Redemption Cards, or cash for some of your charges, the system doesn’t always auto-apply those the way you expect, and it’s best to get clarity.

Talking to a Cast Member is especially helpful if you’re doing split payments, redeeming discounts, or want to move certain charges onto a different card. It’s better to nip something in the bud before it becomes a problem. Similarly, if something feels off about your billing, you’ll want to make sure you get that documented before officially checking out.

Disney’s Old Key West Resort

Checkout obviously matters greatly, and if you want a late checkout AFTER 11 AM, you’ll want to request that in person. Availability is extremely limited and varies by resort, so it’s best to ask for that service early in your stay.

Additionally, if you’re storing luggage with Bell Services, shipping packages, or taking some sort of rideshare, stopping by the lobby and working with Cast Members makes the process a lot easier.

Bell Services at the Contemporary

You don’t even have to visit the front desk if you still want to officially check out! In fact, checking out via the My Disney Experience app is a popular way to close out your stay. The app’s location services aren’t perfect and might trigger an earlier “automatic checkout” and lock you out (especially if you’re off-property at the Disney Parks), so you can avoid this by using the app’s express checkout feature (or even let it happen automatically before leaving). Checking out a bit early doesn’t stop you from using the hotel’s amenities and Bell Services.

To use Express Checkout, go into your “Hotel Reservations” in the app and select “View Charges” to check yourself out of your stay after 6 AM. If you’re leaving before 6 AM.

Disney’s BoardWalk

As for “just leaving,” the obvious perk is that you grant yourself some extra time. Whether that’s making a breakfast reservation, heading back into the Disney Parks for one final Disney day, or getting to the airport at lightspeed, letting checkout happen behind the scenes could be the way to go.

For the most part, we’ll usually advise either checking out through the app or in person with Cast Members, just so you can tackle any potential issues. With that said, if your account looks normal and your final bill is squared away, Disney demons aren’t planning on tracking you down and dragging you to the front desk.
