We love hopping on the Disney Cruise Line!

While it’s a lot of fun each time, just like anything, mistakes can happen on your vacation. Recently, a child fell overboard on a Disney Cruise, leading us to wonder about safety precautions. Now, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about what happens if you fall overboard.
While the Disney Cruise Line has several safety protocols and precautions, accidents can still happen. Recently, one scary incident led to a child falling overboard on a Disney Cruise and her father diving in after her. On June 29th, 2025, the accident happened on the Disney Dream cruise ship as it pulled back into the Fort Lauderdale port.

According to USA Today, it is unclear how the child fell overboard; however, the Disney Cruise Line team reacted quickly. An emergency call for an “Mr. M.O.B”, or man overboard, went out over the ship’s intercom. In response to the incident, a Disney Cruise Line representative said, “The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water.”

The representative continued to say, “We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.” The cruise line team launched life preservers and deployed a rescue boat within minutes of the child falling.

The child reportedly fell from the 4th deck of the ship. While each deck does feature railings and plexiglass for safety, you never know what could happen. So, what are Disney’s precautions to prevent situations like this in the future? First, if you ever see someone fall overboard, you should alert a Cast Member immediately. Before your cruise begins, all guests are required to participate in a pre-departure assembly drill to comply with U.S. Coast Guard and international safety regulations.

The assembly drill teaches you what to do during emergencies on the ship and where to go if an evacuation is ever required. The ship also has plexiglass barriers, which we mentioned before.

Railings on the ship are 42 inches high to help prevent falls. Disney also has 24/7 security and surveillance. For each child-specific location, like the Oceaneer Club, there is a strict check-in and check-out system so children can’t wander alone.

For the pools, lifeguards are constantly supervising while they’re open. Additionally, each ship has an overboard detection system that is designed to alert the crew if someone goes overboard.

In addition to these things, Disney also has a Safety Management System that includes:
- A Safety Management System containing safety and environmental guidelines that are audited internally as well as by Lloyd’s Register, an independent global risk management and certification organization.
- A robust training program that includes onboard safety training for all crew and advanced training for those assigned to specialized safety duties such as lifeboat operator or firefighter.
- A series of drills and exercises to simulate the crew’s capability to respond to a variety of events.
- Annual audits and inspections conducted internally and externally by organizations such as the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Public Health, Transport Canada Marine Safety and other port state control authorities.
- A system of technical, oversight and staffing redundancies that provides for checks and balances with our safety protocols.
- An automated scheduled maintenance program for shipboard equipment.
- Programmed testing of backup systems for key shipboard systems and critical equipment to ensure they perform when or if needed.

The best way to prevent any scary incidents is to ensure you’re following all of the rules for the cruise line. Don’t run along the pool decks, don’t climb the railings, and listen when Cast Members give directions. While nothing is impossible, following each rule and listening to Cast Members is the number one way to prevent accidents on your Disney Cruise.

As always, be sure to keep following AllEars for more Disney news and updates.
