Curated by a team of writers, the list takes a hard look at movies throughout time and ranks the 100 BEST of them. Now, when you are choosing so few from hundreds of thousands of options, you’ll always have differing opinions. But we want to hear YOUR thoughts on where some Disney favorites landed.

Coming in at #98 we had Toy Story, which Variety noted was at the forefront of its time for technology when it came out in 1994. In their piece, they looked at the evolving CGI talents of Pixar, noting that “nothing has surpassed that first toon, thanks to great writing and voice work that, even more than the CGI, brought Woody, Buzz Lightyear and their pals to life. ”

While not a Disney entry, the next on the list comes from 20th Century (owned by Disney). At #87 we have 1965’s The Sound of Music, which is currently streaming on Disney+. The Variety team particularly raves about Julie Andrews, noting that, “Julie Andrews has her own sublime and saintly incandescence.”

Bambi ranked as the 63rd-best film. In their explanation, the team wrote, “Animation may not strictly be a children’s medium, but one reason it’s thought of as such is the splendid way Walt Disney used the hand-drawn form to bring dreams to life.” They continued with, “What makes this Disney’s best is the simple way it invites audiences to empathize with creatures.”

Next up, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back took the 30th spot on the list. Variety noted that it was during this sequel that the series “showed its full potential.”

  1. I like that the list actually includes some films I haven’t seen (as I’ve seen close to 6,300), but there are some really horrible entries on it, too. I actually like that they included The Empire Strikes Back, because most of these lists default to including only Star Wars.
