Pixar has been having some issues recently. Its most recent film, Elio, was the worst ever domestic movie debut for the studio. Before that, though, Inside Out 2 scored big for the studio.

The studio seems to be going through hits and misses, but one thing has been made clear: its original films just aren’t hitting the way they used to, maybe since 2017’s Coco. However, the studio is making plans to keep forging ahead, both with sequels and original films, including a Monsters, Inc. sequel, a musical, and a film named Ono Ghost Market, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Sequels seem to be the name of the game for many upcoming Pixar releases. Toy Story 5 releases this summer, while a third Incredibles movie is scheduled for 2028, and a second Coco film is expected in 2029. Now, an insider at Pixar has confirmed a third Monsters, Inc. movie is also on the way, which makes sense, given the renewed interest in the franchise thanks to the Monsters, Inc. land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

There was also a highly underrated Monsters, Inc. series on Disney+ called Monsters at Work, which picked up after the original movie, with Mike & Sulley in charge of the Monsters, Inc. company.

However, two original movies are also coming from the studio that we didn’t previously know about. One is an untitled musical, a first for Pixar, with Turning Red director Domee Shi at the helm. The other movie is Ono Ghost Market, a movie inspired by Asian mythology about “supernatural bazaars where the living and dead interact.”

Of course, Hoppers just released in theaters, and has already earned $13.2 million in North American theaters, with an expected $40 million by the end of its opening weekend, according to Variety. This is double of what Elio made, but still less than half of what the first Inside Out made.

The next release will be Gatto, a movie about an Italian cat named Nero who finds himself indebted to a feline mob boss and “forced to forge an unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose…” The film will be directed by Luca director Enrico Casarosa. What could set this film apart, though, is that the movie appears to blend 2D hand-painted textures with CG animation.

We’ll be keeping an eye out for more Disney and Pixar movie news, so check back with AllEars again soon.
