Pixar is heading back to Italy!

During an appearance at the 2025 Annecy Animation Festival, DisneyPixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter revealed details on the film’s 2027 release, which comes from the same creative mind who brought Luca to life in 2021, director Enrico Casarosa. Here’s what we know.
Like Casarosa’s first feature, the new Pixar film, Gatto, is also set in Italy. This time, the film will be set in Venice.

According to Pixar’s newly-released synopsis, the film follows a black cat named Nero: “Indebted to a feline mob boss, Nero finds himself forced to forge an unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose…”
Variety adds that the character is “forced to forge a truly unexpected friendship with Maya, a street artist that adopts him against his will. Together, those two individuals form an odd couple, but this relation might finally lead Nero to find his purpose…. unless the mysterious and dark side of Venice gets the better of him first.” Furthermore, according to Variety, “The Annecy crowd cheered the announcement and went wild as Docter unveiled animation tests of a distinct, unique hand-painted look, something Pixar has never shown before. The film appears to be rich in colors from Venetian settings, and blends 2D hand paint textures with cutting-edge CG animation.”

The reveal was part of a larger presentation from the legendary Docter (who was also being inducted into Annecy’s Walk of Fame) and other members of the Pixar team, which saw the studio preview 27 minutes of this summer’s upcoming Elio, as well as footage from both of the studio’s 2026 releases, Hoppers and the highly anticipated Toy Story 5, as well as confirmation that Joan Cusack is reprising her role as Jessie in the latter film.

Pixar has announced a NEW film, Gatto, from Luca director Enrico Casarosa, set for release in 2027. Stay tuned to AllEars for more on Disney’s upcoming slate of films.
