We’ve Met Every Character in Disney World. Here’s What You Haven’t Noticed About Them.

You may think you know everything there is to know about meeting the Disney characters but…you’d be WRONG.

Mickey and Minnie

There are all kinds of secrets about Disney character meet-and-greets that you’ve probably never noticed before and today we’re unpacking some of the top ones!

Here are some of the things you’ve probably NEVER noticed about the characters you’ve met in the Most Magical Place on Earth!

Mickey *Might* Be Right Handed

Next time you meet Mickey, try to see what hand he’s using to sign autographs! You may find that Mickey (for the most part) is right-handed. Who knew?!

We love seeing Mickey!

There are times when this might not always be the case, so keep that in mind. But you’ll want to keep a watchful eye and see what you spot!

Reportedly those who are “friends” with Mickey are often trained to write with their right hand even if they are naturally left-handed.

Heya, Mickey!

Again, keep in mind that this might not always be the case. But keep an eye out for it during your next trip and let us know what you find!

Characters Are STUCK Within Their Movies

Ever wished you could ask Rapunzel about the latest Mario video game? Or maybe asked Mickey for his opinion on the latest news? Well, don’t hold your breath!

For the most part, characters are typically “stuck” within their movies.

What’s a Mario?

And when we say stuck in their movies, we really mean it! Most times, that applies to the specific movie they’ve been plucked out of, meaning they don’t yet know what has happened in the sequels (even if you do!). For example, you won’t really hear Ariel talk about her daughter, Melody, because she doesn’t have her daughter until The Little Mermaid II. The Ariel you’re meeting is (generally) Ariel from the first film, so she technically hasn’t had Melody yet!

But some characters (like Queen Anna and Elsa — who have updated looks from Frozen II) might be an exception.

You also (generally) won’t hear the characters talk about the latest TikTok trends, the Jonas Brothers, or even cellphones. We once met Snow White and when we asked to take a selfie with our phone, she marveled at our “magic mirror” (a.k.a. cellphone).

Remember that asking characters about things outside of their worlds can place them in a difficult or awkward position, so now that you know that they’re “stuck” in their films, be sure to be respectful of that and keep it in mind when having conversations with them!

Count Their Fingers Carefully!

You might automatically think that the characters all have 5 fingers, but you’d be WRONG. If you look carefully, some characters, including Mickey…

Mickey!

…Minnie…

Minnie Mouse

…Donald, and others only have…4 fingers!

Donald Duck

For a little while, back in the 60s and 70s, some characters switched to 5-fingered gloves, but that eventually switched back to 4 fingers in the late 70s.

The 4 fingers design matches the animation style of some of these characters. According to U.S. Magazine, many animated characters only have 4 fingers because it saves time and money to draw fewer fingers.

Plus, having fewer fingers can sometimes make the design a little bit more aesthetically pleasing. Walt Disney reportedly once said, “Using five fingers would have made Mickey’s hands look like a bunch of bananas.” 🍌 😂

Hi, Goofy!

So look at those hands carefully the next time you’re in the park and get counting!

Your Autograph Has Been CAREFULLY Crafted

If you’ve ever gotten an autograph from a Disney character, you may have looked at it, admired it, and then closed your autograph book or moved on to the next meet-and-greet. But, we’d encourage you to look a little bit longer at those autographs to see just how amazing they can be!

Those who are “friends” with Disney characters generally have to pass autograph tests before they can meet guests!

Hugs and autographs are carefully crafted

So the next time you look at the autographs you’ve collected, take a minute to really examine how skillfully that autograph was signed and see just how much time your Disney friend takes to carefully get that autograph just right.

It’s no joking matter! You can also look to compare previous and current autographs to see just how similar they are (or should be!).

One Anna Autograph

They put a lot of effort into these and work to keep things consistent. So, for the Anna signature, you’ll notice that they both have that little curl with the first “A,” the first “A” is connected to the first “n,” the second “n” is separated and has a little flair on the top, and the last “a” is all on its own.

Things might not be exactly the same — just as your signature can vary from time to time — but they have many elements that show you just how much work has gone into keeping them similar across guests’ experiences in the parks!

Your Big Moment Can’t Necessarily Involve Mickey

Planning a proposal and want Mickey to be in on the secret? Or maybe you’ve got a baby announcement you want to have happen right in front of Gaston? Well, you can have those special moments in front of the characters, but don’t be surprised if the characters step away and don’t get involved in your big day.

Characters generally aren’t supposed to get super involved in big moments like gender reveals or proposals. And they cannot hold your baby, so don’t ask!

Darth Vader Can’t Really Be Involved in Your Proposal!

Characters may be in the area of your big moment or may be around the space, but they typically can’t play a huge role in the situation. As we mentioned above, you may even see them stepping away to give the guests some room, so just don’t be surprised by that.

Make sure you’ve planned your special moment to really just include you and the other guest(s) you’re with, but don’t rely on the characters playing a big role in it or you may end up being disappointed.

There’s a SECRET Code

The next time you’re waiting in line to meet a character, look to see if they make any kind of special hand movements directed generally at their character attendants (character attendants are the Cast Members who work with the characters and help guide them on/off stage, etc.).

Characters actually have SECRET hand motions they can use to interact with character attendants to let them know when they need to leave the “stage” or other things.

Hi Olaf!

So the next time you’re waiting in line and see a character getting escorted “off stage,” see if they’ve made any specific hand movements before getting taken off. You might just get clued into the secret code these characters are using to communicate essential things to those around them.
