Between WandaVision, Loki, Black Widow, and more, it has been quite the year for new Marvel releases.

And, Marvel isn’t done yet! This weekend marked the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and, while Labor Day has historically seen low theater-going numbers, it seems that this film has gone against the trend.
From opening night, Shang-Chi was projected to break the all-time Labor Day weekend record in the box office and, according to Variety, the film reached this milestone today.

Prior to the release, Shang-Chi was expected to pull in around $50 million over the long weekend, but Variety reports that the film has debuted with $71.4 million earned in its opening weekend. And, it is on track to take in even more as we roll into Monday.

The movie’s three-day box office take is the second-best in the pandemic era (Shang-Chi comes in just under Black Widow’s $80.3 million). And it claims the record for Labor Day weekend debuts, which was previously held by 2007’s Halloween, which took in just $30.6 million.

Although Black Widow debuted in both theaters and as a Premier Access film on Disney+, Shang-Chi opened solely in theaters with an exclusive 45-day window before it arrives on Disney+ for all subscribers.

Prior to the film’s release, Walt Disney Company CEO, Bob Chapek, shared that the exclusive theatrical release was an “experiment” for the company as they move forward in determining their movie release strategy in the future.

The Eternals is the next upcoming Marvel release this November and Disney has yet to share details about whether the film will debut exclusively in theaters or both in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.

Of course, we’ll continue to keep an eye out for more details on all of Disney’s upcoming premiers, so be sure to stay tuned to AllEars for the latest!
