As WandaVision wraps up its season, we’ve admired all the small details throughout the series (even though we still have a BUNCH of questions that need answers).
Despite the fact we’re curious about a few plot points, we actually have a look behind-the-scenes at the making of one of the biggest scenes in the show!
Paul Bettany has been teasing fans for a LONG time about the “surprise actor” he would be sharing “explosive scenes” with on WandaVision. Many fans were speculating appearances from X-Men characters or even Mephisto. But, the joke is…Bettany was literally talking about himself.
In an interview with Marvel, Bettany talked about what it was like to play two very different versions of Vision on the hit show. He couldn’t help but have a laugh, noting “I’ve been saying in interviews that I’ve been waiting to work with this actor. [I’ve been saying,] ‘There’s a surprise piece of casting with this brilliant, amazing actor that I’ve been longing to work with. And we get to go toe to toe in these really explosive scenes.’ And it was me!”
We have to admit that it would be super cool to have scenes with yourself (or an entire movie like The Parent Trap). After White Vision goes head-to-head with WestView Vision, an epic scene takes place as they battle one another and finally end up having a serious conversation about the real Vision’s identity.
We were blown away by how realistic it all looked in episode 9, but Bettany said it was much harder behind-the-scenes of the show. He explained, “To differentiate between the two characters in a way that didn’t just feel superficial…I mean, of course, one is purple, and one is white, so you have that going for you.”
He continued, “But I wanted [The Vision] to be familiar and yet at the same time kind of intimidating. And for some reason, I was really intimidated by the idea. I kept putting off dealing with it because I knew we weren’t shooting it till later. I was letting some ideas percolate because he has a very quick arc for where The Vision needs to go. He has a big turn to get through. I was really frightened of it!”
The most difficult part for Bettany, though, was the amount of lines he had to learn for both sets of characters as well as double the fight choreography. Even though he had a stunt double play the other Vision when he was in the role of the other, Bettany noted that “I have to learn his side of the fight. He would have to learn my side, and then we’d swap. It was all very confusing.”
He explained the script was also exceedingly long, making it a feat to learn. Bettany went on to say, “And then it was really confusing with the — I don’t know it must be a three, four-page dialogue scene, which is [a lot]. We had this huge scene together. I couldn’t learn it. I’m good at learning lines. I couldn’t learn. And then I realized, ‘Oh, I’m trying to learn both things at once.’”
Once he was able to take a step back from the long pages of dialogue, it became easier. Instead, Bettany said he had to “learn it from Vision’s point of view and then relearn it from The Vision’s point of view because things become much easier…to learn when you understand why the person is saying it and what they want. And I realized I couldn’t learn it because I had these two opposing objectives and desires in my head. And it was just impossible.”
He joked that “I was super intimidated by myself” before explaining that he would play the characters on alternate days to keep everything running smoothly. Bettany detailed the process, continuing “I would come in one day and I would be Vision or The Vision. Then Adam [Lytle], my stunt guy, would play Vision. And he learned all of the dialogue and for both parts — he was brilliant. We would play the scene like that.”
Bettany continued, “And then the next day, he would come in. And he would get The Vision. Then I would get Vision. And then we would play the scene like that and the same to the fights so that they could always have my bella faccia on camera, at some point. It was more confusing than I had sort of allotted. It used up all of my brain.”
Regardless of how confusing or difficult it was for Paul Bettany to play both characters, the scenes turned out incredible. And, we couldn’t imagine a better performance to end BOTH Visions’ appearances in the finale of WandaVision!
