NEWS! The Theatrical Release of 'Wonder Woman 1984' Has Been Delayed Until December. Could Disney Be Faced With A Similar Decision?

Yesterday, we talked about some reports in the film industry regarding the release date of the upcoming film Wonder Woman 1984. News seemed to indicate that the film, which had a planned release date of October 2nd, was facing another delay, although Warner Bros had yet to confirm this change.

Today, we can confirm that the film has officially been delayed by almost three months.

Variety has reported that Wonder Woman 1984 will now be released on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2020. If this date holds, the film will be released nearly seven months after its original theatrical release date, which was supposed to be June 2nd, 2020.

This delay may end up affecting the release date of yet another upcoming blockbuster, Dune, which is currently scheduled to be released in theaters one week prior, on December 18th, 2020. Variety has noted that a studio may not want its films to compete with one another for their audience’s attention and dollars.

Movie goers are also awaiting news of potentially more delays for upcoming releases. As of this writing, Disney’s next Marvel installment, Black Widow, still has a release date of November 6th, 2020, although that is starting to be called into question.

The upcoming Disney/Pixar film Soul also has its current theatrical release date of November 20th in tact, although there is some speculation as to whether the film will end up going straight to Disney+, like what happened with the live action remake of Mulan.

According to Variety, approximately 70% of movie theaters have reopened across the United States, including many locations at major chains like AMC, although major markets like New York and Los Angeles remain closed at this time.
