Disney is Developing a New Musical Based on the Film ‘Hidden Figures’!

While the lights of Broadway are dimmed for the rest of 2020, work is still being done to develop the next wave of musical hits!

Disney Theatrical Productions, the powerhouse Broadway producing company behind The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and more is currently working on bringing their next show to “The Great White Way!”

According to the New York Times, a musical adaptation of the film Hidden Figures is in the works! The 2016 film, distributed under 20th Century Fox, received critical acclaim and was nominated for Academy Awards. The Broadway adaptation currently includes film critic Elvis Mitchell as creative consultant. According to the article, Disney has been exploring the idea of bringing Hidden Figures to Broadway since 2018.

The film tells the true story of a group of Black female mathematicians who worked for NASA during the Space Race, which took place in the height of the Civil Rights Era. The film’s cast includes Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe.

Disney currently has two musicals running on Broadway: The Lion King and Aladdin. Its musical Frozen was the first major Broadway show to announce that it would not reopen after the temporary closures end.
