Flying is incredibly stressful, so we appreciate anything to make it just a little easier.

Flying has always been a hassle for many, but now that some TSA rules are changing and throwing people off who have had the rules memorized for years, or some airlines are completely switching up the way they do things (we’re looking at you, Southwest), while others are on the brink of potentially going down the drain (sorry, Spirit, but filing for bankruptcy TWICE in a year is rough). However, the way an airport is laid out can often make a huge difference in satisfaction when flying, and while a new study finds that passengers are happier with North American airports as a whole, you’ll never guess which airport landed in the TOP spot.
According to J.D. Power, John Wayne Airport, Orange County, ranks among the highest in passenger satisfaction among large airports for a second consecutive year, with a score of 730. In second place for large airports comes Tampa International Airport (score of 709), and in third place is Dallas Love Field (score of 705).

Two other categories of airports were also ranked for the same criteria. For mega airports, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport ranked highest for the second consecutive year, with a score of 660. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport was second, with a score of 649, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport came in third, with a score of 634. As for medium-sized airports, Indianapolis International Airport ranked the highest for a fourth consecutive year, with a score of 713, followed by Ontario International Airport with a score of 709, and Buffalo Niagara International Airport with a score of 698.

These study findings were found using a survey called the North America Airport Satisfaction Study that was taken by 30,439 U.S. or Canadian residents who traveled through at least one U.S. or Canadian airport (covering both departure and arrival experiences). However, even if your favorite or local airport didn’t land on this list, the surveys used also found that general happiness with the North American airport experience has improved, going up 10 points, largely driven by improvements in food, beverage, and retail, as well as the ease of traveling through the airport.

Other important findings of the 2025 study were:
- Many airports continue to experience and see record passenger volumes
- Improving dining options to include authentic local food and beverage brands has made a big difference in customer satisfaction
- Passengers who rated their experience as “perfect” in an airport spent more money on average inside rather than those who marked their experiences as “just OK”
- At medium and large airports, 50-56% of passengers spent about 10 minutes or less in line for security, while mega airports saw higher wait times and more crowding
