Giant Cable Falls From Theme Park Ride, Sending Guests “Scattering and Running”

A Cedar Point attraction is currently closed and under investigation after an incident. According to Fox 8 News, a cable on one of the ride’s towers detached from the ride vehicle on August 10th.

While Tony Clark, a Cedar Point Spokesperson, said “the safety system performed as designed and the ride vehicle returned to the loading position,” the attraction is currently closed and under investigation to determine what caused the cable to detach.

Cedar Point is located in Sandusky, Ohio and features 68 rides, including 18 world-class roller coasters. The incident happened on Power Tower in the evening on Sunday, August 10th when a cable snapped on one of the towers. The ride was immediately evacuated and no one was hurt. Power Tower features four towers; two towers that rocket riders 240 feet into the air and two towers that blast riders down from the same height. During the ride, riders experience speeds up to 60 miles per hour.

According to Ryan, a guest interviewed by Fox 8 News, the cable snapped and struck the guard tower. He said, “it sounded like the earth was coming to an end. That’s when everyone started freaking out, scattering, and running.” It was a scary situation for guests, but luckily, no one was injured during the incident.

Another Cedar Point attraction, Siren’s Curse, has also been experiencing issues. The new roller coaster opened on July 4th and it got stuck in the “tilt” position for 10 minutes. On July 19th, a similar incident saw riders stuck at a 45-degree angle for nearly 20 minutes. As well, on two different days, the coaster stalled, leading to evacuations of the coaster and riders needing to walk down the coaster’s evacuation steps from a height of 160 feet.
