“What’s the Point?” Fans React to the New Harry Potter TV Series Coming Later This Year

After years of development, casting announcement, rumors, and debate, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the upcoming Harry Potter series that will air on the MAX streaming service. And reactions have been… mixed.

The clip previews the start of a new Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone adaptation, which will make up the first season of the series. As one would expect, fans of the series took to social media to express their thoughts on the clip as soon as it dropped.

*A note before we move further: While there is much external debate about the series and all things Potter right now, we are focusing solely on the reactions to the trailer itself.*

Before we dive into the reaction, let’s look at the actual clip:

The clip features some of the best-known early moments from the series’ first book, including Harry being mistreated by the Dursleys, being bullied, receiving his Hogwarts letter, meeting Hagrid, meeting Ron and Hermione on the Hogwarts Express, taking classes, and playing Quidditch. Other characters glimpsed in the clip include Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Draco Malfoy, and Minerva McGonagall.

Many of the positive reactions to the trailer focused on the fact that the glimpse provided seemed to indicate that the series will use its longer runtime to focus more on plot lines and characterization that were excised from the 2000s film series. One fan wrote, “This is what I have always wanted. The books fleshed out in a TV series. No movie can do justice to how much there is in the books,” while another chimed in with, “Harry being bullied by Dudley at school when he ends up on the roof. Like this is for the book fans.”

However, not all reactions were that positive. Many users commented on the “necessity” of the series, saying that what was shown was too reminiscent of the film series. As one wrote, “It looks well made… but it also just looks like the movies. Uncannily so, with some imagery and shots looking pretty near identical. Which then makes me wonder… what’s the point?”

Others were even more blunt in their criticism, pointing out how the production value, effect, color palette, and musical choices “paled in comparison” to the films. As one viewer wrote, “They copied and pasted the movie, used a digital tool that makes every actor look more bland, reduced brightness by 75%, and replaced the iconic score with generic slop. Brilliant work, everyone.”

The series stars Dominic McLaughlin as the titular boy wizard, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, John Lithgow as Hogwarts’ Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Prof. Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Prof. Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby as Harry’s Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon Dursley.

Given the… variety of reactions to the trailer, it’s not a stretch to say that the reaction to the series, which will premiere this coming Christmas season according to the trailer, will likely be even more intense. Stay tuned to AllEars for more on the series as news is released.
