Right now, sitting just to the right of EPCOT’s newest mega-attraction — the technologically advanced E-Ticket Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind — is the abandoned remnants of the classic Wonders of Life Pavilion.

During my earliest years visiting EPCOT, the Wonders of Life was always one of my favorite pavilions in Future World, thanks to the advanced simulator attraction Body Wars and the unique Animatronic show Cranium Command. However, due to a litany of factors, the pavilion closed in the mid-00s and has remained shuttered since, outside of some use during EPCOT’s festivals. However, that wasn’t supposed to be the case.
In the late 2010s, Disney began work on a massive “reimagining” of EPCOT that brought massive changes to the park. In 2019, it was announced that the long-abandoned Wonders of Life pavilion would be replaced by the Play! Pavilion, an “interactive futuristic city where guests would be able to interact with a variety of Disney characters.”

At the time, planned attractions for Play! were announced to include an Animation Academy-like experience where Edna Mode teaches guests to draw, the Hotel Heist interactive game hosted by Zootopia’s Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, an arcade, a Monorail Mark X, and a water balloon fight video game experience with various Disney characters.

Throughout 2019, Play! was treated as a major part of the EPCOT project. It was heavily featured in previews of the “new” EPCOT online and as part of the physical preview center at Odyssey, and even added to park maps. However, that all changed in 2020.

Like many Disney projects at the time, the 2020 COVID pandemic massively curtailed Disney’s plans for the Play! Pavilion. In March of 2020, the parks closed, and construction halted. Even after the Disney World parks reopened later that summer — and work on other EPCOT projects resumed — work on the Play! Pavilion remained stalled, and Disney remained quiet on the subject.
Things remained so for several years, until 2023, when the Play! Pavilion was removed from the aforementioned park maps in 2023, and Disney said that plans for the area were being “reevaluated.” The following year, Disney announced that EPCOT’s reimagining was “complete” upon the opening of CommuniCore Hall in 2024, essentially confirming that the Play! Pavilion was canceled, at least for now.

With the Play! Pavilion relegated to the realm of unbuilt Disney attractions, the former Wonders of Life/Festival Center continues to sit unused right next to the park’s MCU-themed headliner. Stay tuned to AllEars for further updates on potential new projects coming to the area, and more on Walt Disney World’s evolution.

Pathetic that they’re letting this sit and rot. Do better Disney, do better.
The interactive and educational parts of EPCOT were the reasons my children wanted to go to EPCOT. Not more thrill rides but places they could get their hands on stuff and learn .. it’s sad that the “imagineers” have list their imagination
