There’s something truly special about EPCOT during the Festival of the Holidays! But, you don’t want to spend your money on the wrong treats or miss some of the most special entertainment for the festival.

Every season, our AllEars team heads to opening day of the Festival of the Holidays to taste every treat, catch every show, and scope out what’s really worth your time (and your wallet). And as much as we love this event, even seasoned Disney pros like us have made a few mistakes along the way. So, if you’re planning your visit, learn from our experiences. Here are the biggest things I’ve done wrong at EPCOT’s Festival of the Holidays, and how you can avoid them.
1. Thinking You DON’T Need a Full Day
My first and biggest piece of advice: don’t underestimate how much there is to see and do here. Unlike EPCOT’s Food & Wine Festival, the Festival of the Holidays isn’t really one of those events you can just pop into for the evening. Something is happening literally all day long with morning storyteller performances, midday eats around World Showcase, and nighttime spectaculars like the Candlelight Processional. You’ll be glad you didn’t rush it, because this festival is meant to be savored.

2. Forget to Check the Weather
Florida weather in late November and December is one word: unpredictable. One minute you’re bundled in a sweater sipping hot cocoa, and the next, you’re sweating through your festive spirit jersey. I’ve made the mistake of not checking the forecast and ended up miserable halfway through the day.

Pack smart and remember that layers are your best friend. Bring a light jacket for the chilly mornings and evenings, and don’t forget sunscreen and a poncho (yes, it still rains). Comfortable shoes are also a must; you’ll be walking a lot, and wet socks are not the vibe. Being prepared means you can focus on the fun, not the forecast.

3. Thinking I Could Walk Up for The Candlelight
One of my biggest Disney rookie moments (and yes, it still happens to pros) was assuming I could just walk up to the Candlelight Processional and find a seat. Spoiler alert: you can’t. This stunning show, featuring a full orchestra, choir, and celebrity narrator reading the story of Christmas, is one of EPCOT’s most beloved holiday traditions. And when a big-name celebrity is performing, people line up hours in advance.

If this is on your must-do list (and it should be), consider booking a Candlelight Processional Dining Package. It guarantees you a reserved seat and lets you enjoy a nice meal at one of EPCOT’s restaurants instead of standing in a massive queue. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later when you’re comfortably seated instead of standing behind a sea of people.

4. Not Pacing Yourself
The Holiday Cookie Stroll sounds like a dream ( I mean, who doesn’t want to snack on festive cookies from around the world?). But here’s the truth: not all cookies are created equal, and eating too many too quickly can lead to a serious sugar crash. I learned this the hard way.

Instead, pace yourself throughout the day. Split cookies with your group, take breaks between booths, and balance out the sweets with something savory. You’ll enjoy everything more when you don’t overload your taste buds (or your stomach) too soon.

5. Underestimating How Busy It Gets
The Festival of the Holidays is a crowd magnet. Between Disney vacationers, locals, and guests coming specifically for the celebrity narrators, EPCOT can get packed — especially on weekends and evenings. I’ve made the mistake of assuming it would be a slower day, only to find long food booth lines, Lightning Lanes gone before noon, and dining reservations impossible to snag.

If you can, plan your visit for a weekday. Arrive early, prioritize your must-do items, and make your dining reservations as soon as they open. A little strategy goes a long way toward keeping your day relaxed and enjoyable.

6. Skipping the Cultural Storytellers
This one hurts the most, because it’s where I missed out on the heart of the festival. In the rush to try every cookie and drink, I once completely skipped the Holiday Storytellers, and I’ll never make that mistake again.

Some pavilions feature storytellers who share how their country celebrates the holidays. You might hear Père Noël in France talk about French Christmas traditions, or La Befana in Italy tell her charming tale of kindness and gifts. These performances are beautiful and educational. They bring the true spirit of the season to life. If you only focus on food and drinks, you’ll miss one of EPCOT’s most meaningful holiday experiences.

7. Forgetting to Budget
Between the cookies, cocktails, and limited-edition merchandise, costs can sneak up fast at the Festival of the Holidays. I’ve definitely walked out of EPCOT with a lighter wallet than expected more than once. To keep your spending in check, load up a Disney Gift Card with a set amount for the day. It’s easier to track what you’re spending, and it can even make booth transactions quicker. Plus, keep an eye on our AllEars reviews because we’ll tell you exactly which booths, treats, and drinks are worth splurging on this year so you can get the most magic for your money.

The EPCOT Festival of the Holidays is one of the most joyful events at Disney World, but going in with a plan can make all the difference. Avoid these mistakes, pace yourself, and soak in the magic from every corner of World Showcase.
