Here at AllEars, we know ALL about Disney World and Disneyland vacations! However, a new type of vacation has started trending: the “coolcation.” What exactly is a “coolcation,” you might ask?

Well, according to the New York Times, a “coolcation” is a vacation to locations with cooler temperatures to either escape hot weather from where you live or avoid the heat of a traditional summer spot.
After a day in Disney World during the heat of the summer, we can definitely see how a “coolcation” could be very appealing! While it is hard to beat a stroll down Main Street, U.S.A., or a ride on Avatar Flight of Passage, we know that Florida heat can be brutal. We love sharing tips to beat the heat, but we also understand that your idea of a vacation may not be sweating your way around a Disney World theme park.

That is why the trend of “coolcations” has gotten so popular! Record-breaking heat waves have swept across Europe with temperatures getting above 104 degrees Fahrenheit and fueling regional wildfires, according to CNBC. As a result, many tourists have been looking for cooler, quieter, and less crowded vacation destinations. Travel + Leisure has even created a list of 10 U.S. “coolcation” destinations to escape the heat.

While we won’t be ditching our Disney World trips permanently, we are also thinking a “coolcation” sounds like the perfect idea! Then we can head back to Disney World when the weather starts to cool down a bit.

However, the New York Times also mentions concerns about this new trend and the impacts this trend is having on those countries that attract tourists looking for cooler climates. In particular, the Nordic region is seeing a huge influx of tourists. In 2023, all the Nordic countries reported more overnight stays than in any other year.

Not only are countries in the Nordic region absolutely gorgeous, but they also offer travelers cooler temperatures than some other destinations. However, while Nordic governments are eager to boost tourism, they are also balancing a tourist overload and the negative impacts that more tourists can have on the countries.
