A major change has already happened to the lobby of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort!

Disney World has lots of ambitious plans in store for the future. From new shows to new lands, ride closures, and more, it feels like we’re in for major changes over the next several years. Disney’s most recent announcement of a new bar and updated lobby planned for one of its most notable hotels divided opinions when revealed, and we’re already seeing evidence of Disney making good on those plans so quickly!
We stopped by Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort to check out the lobby changes that started on April 14th. This sought-after hotel is one of our favorites to visit at Disney World due to its Victorian theming, plenty of great restaurants and lounges to keep your tummy full, and seasonal events like the current Grand Cottage full of Easter themed treats.

It truly is a sight to behold as you step inside, and it’s a must-see on our list of Disney World hotels to tour when you’re looking for something to do outside of the parks for a day. But, as breathtaking as this hotel is, something new is on its way.

You see, Disney recently announced that a major change would be coming to this hotel soon. In fact, one of the features that’s been around since it was built will be removed and transformed. The iconic birdcage that’s sat in the hotel lobby for decades will be reimagined as a bar once construction is complete.

So when is this change supposed to happen? Well, it’s already started! What began as a last view of its current state, turned into quite the twist when we noticed that construction work has already began inside the lobby. We spotted several temporary walls going up around the birdcage to prep it for removal.

These walls will enclose the birdcage inside the lobby, making its disassembly and impending construction as least disruptive to visitors to the hotel as possible. You can already see it’s surrounded on all sides from the bottom floor…

…and heading up to the upper levels gives you a unique view inside to watch its progress.

Of course, construction of this scale is anticipated to take a while, so, unfortunately, Disney has announced that there will be no Gingerbread House for the first time in decades for this upcoming holiday season. While it’s crushing news to receive, Disney has also confirmed that the other hotels that feature Gingerbread houses and creations for Christmas will still go up as planned for this year. We’re not completely out of holiday cheer after all!
For now, it will be an adventure to watch along and document the process of the construction until the reveal of the new lobby design inside Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. We’ll be bringing you all of the updates, so stay tuned with us right here at AllEars!

I’ve never really liked the Grand Floridian. Just too hoity-toity for me. I realize I’m probably in a minority of one, but I’m very glad Disney offers (better) alternatives. I’d MUCH rather stay at the Wilderness Lodger or Animal Kingdom Lodge.
