NEWS: Huge Number of Cruise Passengers Expected in Port Canaveral

If you’re sailing on a cruise out of Port Canaveral this weekend, you may want to give yourself some extra time to get to the terminal!

Disney Wish

The newest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, the Disney Wish, will officially embark on its maiden voyage next week, on July 14th. We recently had a chance to preview the ship, including all of the dining, entertainment, and accommodations it has to offer passengers. But that’s not the only major cruising update to be on the lookout for in Port Canaveral in the coming days!

WESH has reported that tens of thousands of people are expected to be heading to Port Canaveral this weekend. The huge influx of people is due to both local events and a large number of summertime cruisers.

At Port Canaveral

There are several fishing events in the area this weekend that are drawing in visitors, including the red snapper fishing season and a fishing contest on Saturday. Plus, WESH reports that all six of the cruise ships that call Port Canaveral home will be sailing out on Saturday.

The cruise industry is seeing the largest number of passengers in over three years. In speaking about the crowds this weekend, Peter Bergeron, Port Canaveral’s senior manager of public safety and security said, “We need to control the people leaving and coming to make sure that they are all safe. You (multiply) that by six, so it’s probably 50 to 70,000 people. So think of filling and unfilling an NFL stadium.”

If you’re sailing out on a cruise this weekend, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to the terminal, in case the crowds cause delays.

  1. Is this article referring to the current weekend, July 9-10, or is it referring to next weekend, July 16-17? We will be there July 16 to board the Fantasy so I want to plan accordingly for traffic. Thank you!
