Yesterday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced and outlined a phased approach to re-opening the state in the wake of the current health crisis.
With phase one set to begin on Monday, May 4th, local leadership will be advising their cities and counties how to proceed in the coming weeks. This includes Mayor Jerry Demings of Orange County, where much of Disney World resides.
Reports have emerged saying that Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings will unveil a plan on Friday for business in Orange County to use as a guide when it comes to re-opening in the coming weeks. Demings noted that businesses in Orange County may open on Monday “if they follow Gov. Ron DeSantis’ new order”, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
While most of the state has been cleared by the Governor to begin re-opening various businesses as soon as Monday, Demings noted that while Orange County may follow DeSantis’ order, the county may also require additional time and additional protocol.
Demings noted that he is not ruling out the addition of further restrictions on top of the Governor’s order, if the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force concludes that additional restrictions are necessary. The Task Force is set to continue working this week in order to meet a Friday deadline.
Demings noted, “How we re-open Orange County must be done with extreme care…We do not want to open too quickly without a solid plan in place.” Demings noted that he had preferred a later re-opening for Orange County, but concluded that DeSantis’ plan strikes a good balance between the health and safety of Floridians and the needs for economic recovery.
On Wednesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the state would move into phase one of its re-opening process on Monday, May 4th. In phase one, retail locations and restaurants may re-open at 25% capacity, with outdoor dining allowed as long as tables are at least six feet apart.
At this time, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties are excluded from entering phase one, but the governor hopes they can join the rest of the state soon.
