Tron Attraction Construction Causes Some Ride Disruptions

The Disney Parks Blog released more details today on the construction of new Tron coaster attraction that is currently being built in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, adjacent to Tomorrowland’s Space Mountain.

The Tron attraction is based on TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland. Riders board a train of two-wheeled Lightcycles for a race through the digital frontier. The ride has been one of that park’s most popular attractions since it opened.

As construction in the Magic Kingdom progresses, the operations of several existing attractions is going to be temporarily disrupted.

The Walt Disney World Railroad will cease running and will sit “in residence” at its Main Street Station starting in December 2018. This will give guests the chance to have an up-close look at the railroad and take advantage of some unique photo opportunities.

In addition, the Tomorrowland Speedway will close for part of 2019, to allow for the adjustment of its track. Contrary to rumors, the attraction is not permanently closing — it will reopen otherwise unchanged in the summer of 2019.

Magic Kingdom’s Tron attraction, which was originally announced at the D23 Expo in 2017, is set to debut in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021.

  1. Not to hear that whistle blow when you enter Magic Kingdom?! What s shame. Trains were so special to Walt! Breaks my heart not to be able to take a relaxing ride around the perimeter of the park. Some old things should not replaced with new!! This is certainly one of them. Iconic. So sad.

    1. Hi Gayle. The train isn’t being replaced, no need to worry! Operation is suspended while TRON is being constructed that’s all. And they do still blow the whistle even though the engine is stationary.

  2. Is it known how long the railroad will be temporarily disrupted?

DEBK Replies: No, they haven’t given an exact reopening date, but since they say the Speedway will reopen by Summer 2019, I would hope the railroad will be open by then, too.

  3. On the off-chance that someone might actually read this, and since Tomorrowland Speedway is mentioned here, it seems (maybe too) obvious that it would be great to modernize the speedway with all-electric (read: Tesla) roadsters. Even better if they were powered by induction underneath the roadway itself and employed self-driving technology to avoid collisions with other drivers. What better way to return the speedway to Tomorrowland relevance and eliminate all the noise and pollution caused by the attraction!

  4. When you say that the railroad will “cease running,” is this permanent or only during construction? One of our favorite rides is the railroad, it’s a great break from the hectic park.

DEBK Replies: Hi Claudia, as we said, these closures are temporary. “As construction in the Magic Kingdom progresses, the operations of several existing attractions is going to be temporarily disrupted.” So don’t worry, the railroad isn’t going away.
