8 Things I Wish I’d Known Before Upgrading My Hotel Room at Disney’s Pop Century Resort

Paying for a room upgrade at a Disney resort sounds like a no-brainer until you actually do it and realize you didn’t quite get what you expected.

Disney’s Pop Century Resort

Pop Century is one of the most popular Value resorts on property, and the “Preferred Room” upgrade is one of its most misunderstood offerings. Before you click that “upgrade” button or add it to your reservation, there are a few things worth knowing that most guests only figure out after the fact. Here’s what I wish someone had told me before I upgraded my room at Pop Century.

A “Preferred Room” Is About Location, Not Luxury

Let’s clear this up right away. A Preferred Room at Pop Century is not a nicer room. You’re not getting better furniture, a bigger bathroom, or upgraded bedding. The room itself is identical to every other standard room at the resort.

What you’re actually paying for is proximity to the main amenities, specifically the lobby, main pool, and dining options. That’s it. So the real question is how much a shorter walk is worth to you.

You Could Still End Up Walking More Than You Think

Here’s where things get a little tricky. Preferred Rooms are clustered near the lobby and main pool area, which sounds ideal until you factor in where you’re actually spending your time. For example, some preferred rooms sit closer to the lobby but farther from the Skyliner station.

If you don’t make a specific room request, you could pay extra and still end up hoofing it across the resort more than you planned. The main thing is that the resort is large, and “closer to the lobby” doesn’t automatically mean “close to everything.”

The Skyliner Can Be Worth More Than the Upgrade

If you’re planning to spend most of your trip at EPCOT or Disney’s Hollywood Studios, this is the thing you really need to think about. Pop Century’s Skyliner station is located near the Classic Hall lobby area, but the gondola access point specifically sits between the 50s and 60s sections.

Being near that station can save you significant time and energy every single day. For some guests, that convenience is worth far more than a Preferred Room designation.

You Might Actually Be Paying for More Noise

Preferred Rooms sit in the busiest part of the resort. The areas closest to the main pool, the lobby, and the dining hall naturally see the most foot traffic throughout the day and into the evening.

If you’re a light sleeper or traveling with kids on strict nap schedules, the quieter sections of the resort might actually serve you better. The 70s and 80s buildings, for example, feel noticeably more tucked away and peaceful than the areas near the main hub.

You Can Request a Specific Building Instead

This one comes with a disclaimer, because it is absolutely not guaranteed. Before you pay to upgrade, it’s worth knowing that you can request a specific building or location for free.

Through the My Disney Experience app or website, you can make room requests during online check-in. Just head to “My Plans,” select your reservation, and choose “Modify Check-In” to see available room request options. If you are using the app, you can tap into your resort reservation and access the same options there.

If the exact request you want isn’t listed, you can also call Disney Resort Hotel Reservations and have a Cast Member add a note to your booking. Again, just keep in mind that all requests are subject to availability and not guaranteed. Still, this gives you a real shot at landing a great location without paying extra. It’s one of the easiest ways to potentially get more value out of your stay.

Not All Sections Are Equal, and Some Rooms Are Way Better

Pop Century’s themed decades aren’t just for show. They can completely change your experience.

Pop Century

If being close to the Skyliner is your priority, rooms around the 1950s section, especially near areas like building 4, can put you steps away from the station. That means faster mornings and shorter walks back after long park days.

Pop Century

If food and pools matter more, rooms in the 1960s section, like those near building 5, are incredibly convenient. You will be right by Everything POP and the Hippy Dippy Pool, which is the main hub of activity at the resort.

Pop Century

There are also hyper-specific “best of” spots depending on your priorities. Rooms near the Bowling Pool in the 1950s section or the Computer Pool in the 1980s section offer a balance of convenience and slightly less foot traffic. If you want something quieter, areas in the 1970s section tend to feel more tucked away and relaxed.

Pop Century

And if you’re driving, certain rooms are closer to parking lots, which can save you time if you plan to use your car instead of Disney transportation. The point is that a well-chosen standard room in the right section can easily outperform a randomly assigned preferred room.

This Upgrade Is All About Strategy, Especially on Longer Trips

If you’re only staying two nights, the difference in location probably isn’t going to make or break your trip. But if you’re staying five, six, or seven nights, the cumulative effect of a slightly more convenient room location adds up.

Pop Century

The longer your stay, the more you’ll feel the impact of where your room is, which makes the upgrade a more justifiable expense for extended visits.

At the end of the day, the Preferred Room upgrade at Pop Century is a logistics tool, not a pampering experience. It’s about shaving minutes off your walks, reducing decision fatigue, and optimizing your daily flow through the resort. If that kind of strategic advantage appeals to you, it can genuinely be worth it. If you were expecting a luxury upgrade, you’ll want to recalibrate your expectations before arrival.

The bottom line is that the Preferred Room upgrade at Pop Century isn’t bad, it’s just specific. Knowing exactly what you’re getting (and what you’re not) makes all the difference in deciding whether it fits your trip.
