Out of all the dining places at the Magic Kingdom, this one gets hyped up quite a bit!

We hopped off the boat and stopped by Skipper’s Canteen at Magic Kingdom. There are lots of unique eats and drinks here, and we’re going to give you our full review.
Background
There is some rich lore behind the restaurant, as it started as a tropical headquarters that allowed skippers to rest before their next adventure. Now, you’re invited to join them.

Here’s what you need to know about dining at this restaurant.
Atmosphere
The dining spot is based on the world-famous Jungle Cruise attraction. You’ll find it located in Adventureland, right across from the Swiss Robinson Family Tree House. It provides an adventurous dining environment with a punny twist.

There are multiple different dining rooms here — some more exciting than others. You can request a specific room, but be advised that you might have to wait a little bit longer at check-in.

But enough about that, what are we eating?!
Food & Drinks
You always have to start with a starter, so we got the “secret menu” Pao de Queijo for $16, which is Brazilian Cheese Bread. When you bite into it, you’ll find it’s chewy but not overly chewy. It takes a couple of bites, but it’s like a satisfying chewy bread. It’s definitely the cheese that makes it chewy, and the cheese flavour is noticeable in this, which we really appreciated — sometimes with cheese bread you can’t really taste the cheese too much, or the cheese flavour might be too strong. Whereas this had a good balance — you can taste a good amount of cheese and a good amount of bread.

The two dips included are poblano pepper cream cheese and chimichurri. The chimichurri has a little bit more of a salty, earthier, herby flavour to it, whereas the poblano tasted like normal cream cheese to us, with a hint of poblano flavor. They’re both really good! The bread on its own is good, but with the dips, it’s so much better.

Now, let’s get into the entrees, where we grabbed the “Tastes like Chicken” Because it is! for $30. This dish is Crispy-fried Chicken, Jasmine Rice, Chili-Soy Glaze, and Pickled Vegetable Slaw.

This dish was really good, with the jasmine rice being the standout, as it was super flavorful. It had a bit of a saltier and more savory taste to it than plain rice. The chicken was moist, and they gave us a good portion of it. It was cooked well, and it had a chilli soy sauce on it. The sauce made the chicken sweeter and saltier.

The chilli soy sauce was just a little bit too salty for us, but it wasn’t bad. The dish also comes with pressed veggies like cabbage, lettuce, that kind of stuff. This dish is more on the safer side for picky eaters, and it was good overall!
We also grabbed the Nile Nellie’s Noodle Bowl for $35. This is described as Niles and Niles of Rice Noodles…Stir-fried Shrimp, Tamarind Sauce, Toasted Peanuts, and Fresh Herbs.

This dish is very fresh! The noodles are light, and they’re not too chewy; they’re pretty firm, so you can tell they were cooked well. The peanuts had a good crunch, as well as added a good balance to the flavor. They’re kind of sprinkled all over the dish — not a lot, but enough to tell that they’re there and to taste them.

The shrimp is firm, thick, and overall just very delicious. It wasn’t overcooked and chewy at all. You also get a decent amount of shrimp pieces with the noodle bowl — ours came with eight. The mint on top gave it a fresh minty taste (obviously). The herbs overall balanced out very well because the dish itself is super savoury. This is our favourite thing that we had here, and we would definitely get this again. It also feels like a great portion of food. You can definitely finish it without needing to take any of it home.

For dessert, we had the Malva Pudding Cake for $9.50. The Cast Member serving us told us this was her favorite dessert, and we couldn’t agree more. This was Amarula Cream Liqueur, Vanilla Bean Whipped Ganache, and Apricot-Caramel Coulis with Vanilla Gelato. This dessert was amazing. We don’t even know where to start between the gelato and the piece of cake. Let’s start with the gelato!

It came with vanilla gelato with some caramel drizzle on it. It doesn’t say on the menu, but the gelato also comes with pieces of popcorn on top of it, which was a fun surprise. The popcorn almost gave the gelato a bland, crunchy counterpart (in a great way). The gelato tastes like vanilla ice cream. It was very sweet with the caramel, but then that popcorn really balances out the flavour. There were also these crunchy bread pieces like croutons, but they’re not croutons. We would’ve gotten a bowl of the gelato with the popcorn on top of it alone; it was just that good.

Let’s talk about the cake, which had a very faint sweetness to it, and it definitely worked. All we can say is it just hit different. The flavour really comes when you mix the cake with the cream that it comes with, as well as the apricot caramel bits. They’re really just like jelly apricots, and they were so delicious. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS! It gave the cake a really nice, sweet, and fruity flavor.

Overall, this dessert was amazing. It’s kind of like two desserts in one. It’s definitely worth it, and we would 100% get this almost every time
To drink, we picked up the Enchanted Orange Dream for $9.75. This is made with Dole Whip Orange blended with Vanilla Soft-serve with an Orange Candied Rim. The drink tastes like a Creamsicle smoothie, basically.

It has small orange candies on the rim and some whipped cream on the top, that’s about it. It’s surprisingly easy to put down; it looked like it was going to be like a thick smoothie or milkshake. However, it’s super light and fluffy for what a smoothie-type drink could be. This was actually pretty tasty. We could definitely see kids loving this drink. It’s definitely sweet, but it wasn’t overly so.
Magic or Tragic?
