The U.S. Department of State is warning travelers to “reconsider travel” to Madagascar following an updated travel advisory. The country’s travel advisory level was updated to Level Three.

The State Department also updated its advisory summary with new information, and tourists should consider the information before visiting the country.
There are four Travel Advisory Levels that the U.S. uses to rank countries by safety. Popular tourist destinations, like France, Italy, and Spain, are ranked at a Level Two, a.k.a. “Exercise increased caution,” while Canada and Australia are listed at Level One.

Recently, Madagascar’s risk level was increased to Level Three. The U.S. State Department is warning travelers to reconsider travel to Madagascar due to crime and unrest, specifically citing incidents like armed robbery and assault.

The advisory summary explains that “protests occur throughout the country, and they can turn violent without warning.” If you travel to Madagascar, it is recommended that “U.S. citizens should stay in place and avoid areas with protests or demonstrations.”
Additionally, travelers are urged to have a plan to leave in an emergency that does not depend on U.S. government help.

The State Department also recommends that travelers purchase travel insurance before traveling. Even for vacations to other countries with a lower risk, it’s always a good idea to protect yourself in the event of an emergency. Some insurance providers may offer varying levels of evacuation assistance, medical insurance, and trip cancelation coverage.
In the meantime, we’re always on the lookout for the latest travel news, so stay tuned for more.
