The New Warning We’re Issuing for Orlando Airport

Flying into Orlando International Airport can be a whole different beast compared to other airports you may have visited.

Orlando International Airport

We’ve flown into big, busy airports before, but nothing has quite prepared us for what it’s like navigating MCO. The crowds are there at all hours of the day, the lines can be overwhelming before you even get to your gate, and it’s easy to feel unprepared if you don’t know what you’re walking into. If you’ve got a Disney World or Universal Orlando trip coming up, here’s what you need to know before you set foot inside Orlando International Airport.

The Crowds Are Next Level

We know airports are busy. That’s just part of the travel experience. But Orlando International is on another level. Even early-morning flights at 5AM can feel like you’re walking into a full-on rush hour. We’ve seen luggage check lines that basically wrap around the building before the sun even comes up.

MCO Baggage Claim

That means you can’t treat MCO like your average airport, where you cut it a little close and still expect everything to run smoothly. If there’s one warning we want you to remember, it’s this: build in extra time, no matter what time your flight is. If you’re checking a bag, that’s where you’re most likely to lose time, so anything you can do to minimize your reliance on the luggage counters is going to make your day easier. Travel as light as possible, print bag tags ahead of time if your airline allows it, and don’t assume the line will be short just because you booked an off-peak flight.

Security Might Surprise You

Here’s the twist, though. For as overwhelming as baggage check can be, security, as of late, at MCO has been surprisingly smooth. Normally, we’d expect security to be the part of the trip that takes the longest, but that hasn’t been our experience lately.

We’ve been keeping an eye on the MCO app, which gives real-time updates on security line wait times, and it’s rare for them to creep above 15 minutes. That’s right — even during peak travel hours, we’ve seen consistent waits of 15 minutes or less. That’s practically unheard of at most major airports.

Orlando International Airport security

On a recent trip, we got through in just 15 minutes for a 4PM flight, and another time, for an 8AM departure, we practically walked straight up and through. It’s honestly a little wild compared to what we were expecting.

One possible reason? TSA has been more relaxed in certain areas, like allowing passengers to keep their shoes on during the screening process. Small changes like this have made the lines move much faster, and it’s been a game-changer at MCO.

Don’t Get Too Comfortable

Even though security times might be short right now, we don’t want you to get too comfortable and assume that’ll always be the case. This is Orlando we’re talking about, and thousands of families are traveling in and out every day for their Disney and Universal vacations. All it takes is a busy holiday weekend, a staffing issue, or a sudden influx of delayed flights to make the security situation look completely different.

So while we’ve seen incredibly short wait times lately, our warning is this: don’t bet your trip on it. Still arrive early enough to handle unexpected hiccups. If you end up breezing through security, great — you’ll just have more time to relax at your gate, grab a snack, or scroll through photos from your trip. But if you cut it too close, you’ll regret it.

How to Stay Ahead

Here’s what we recommend to make your life easier when traveling through Orlando International Airport:

  • Download the MCO App – This is a must. The app will give you live updates on security wait times, which can help you decide whether to head straight to the checkpoint or take a few minutes to grab coffee first.
  • Arrive Earlier Than Normal – Especially if you’re checking a bag. Luggage lines are the biggest time drain at this airport, and there’s no way to predict how bad they’ll be until you’re there.
  • Travel Light If You Can – Skipping the checked bag process is the easiest way to avoid the chaos. If you can fit everything in a carry-on, you’ll thank yourself later.
  • Don’t Rely on the Security Lines Being Quick – The short waits are amazing, but treat them as a bonus, not a guarantee. Build in extra time anyway.
Orlando International Airport

Orlando International Airport is the gateway to so many amazing vacations, but it can also be a little intimidating if you’re not prepared. With these warnings in mind, you’ll be ready to handle whatever MCO throws your way.
