Florida — are you okay?!

No, really. The flooding, we could handle. We survived the unbearable heat, too. But you cannot be serious — first, parachuting spiders. And now, hairy, venomous caterpillars?!
YUP, we wish we were kidding. But, according to Fox 35, these are very real and very painful.

No, that’s not a tiny wig. That’s a venomous puss caterpillar. They’re usually one inch long, found near oak and citrus trees, and active around fall and spring. And those hairs hide spines that are attached to poison glands — and yes, they’ll sting you with them. Here’s what to do if you’re stung:
- Place clear tape over the area that’s been stung
- Pull the strip off to remove the spines
- Repeat with a clean piece of tape until spines are completely removed (do not use the same piece of tape twice)
- Apply ice packs
- Mix baking soda and water and apply to the affected area

Oh, and according to the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida, it’s one of the most venomous in the country, so stay safe out there! And if you’re visiting Disney World, don’t touch hairy bugs (a solid piece of advice, honestly).
