Disney's Newest Film 'Lightyear' to Bring In $135M Opening Weekend

We’re finally getting to know the man behind the toy — Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear blasts off into theaters on June 17th, and we’ve been ready and waiting to find out about Buzz Lightyear’s origin story ever since the film was first announced. We know we’re excited about the movie, but just how popular is Lightyear expected to be opening weekend?

Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear comes out in theaters on Friday, June 17th, and we know we’ll be in theaters checking out all there is to know about this Galactic Hero!

Judging by the opening weekend box office projections for the film, we won’t be the only ones either. According to Deadline, Lightyear stands to rake in between $70M-$85M across 4,200 theaters in the United States and Canada and $135M worldwide.

While this may sound like a good chunk of change, it’s not necessarily as high a number as one might expect from a Pixar film. When Toy Story 4 premiered in 2019, it took in $120.9M in the U.S.

Because Lightyear is considered a spin-off movie and not a sequel to the Toy Story films, its opening weekend projections are placed into a different box office subset — which typically “open lower than direct IP sequels.”

Lightyear rolls out in the global marketplace today, with Italy and South Korea being first, followed by Germany, Brazil, Australia, Mexico, the UK, and Spain. As we previously reported, the movie won’t be shown in many Middle East markets due to a same-sex kiss.
