Marvel's 'Shang-Chi' Is Set to Break All-Time Labor Day Weekend Record

It has been a big year for Marvel entertainment!

We’ve seen hit shows like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki come to Disney+, plus big movies like Black Widow. Now, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in the middle of its opening weekend, and things are off to a great start for the film!

Historically, Labor Day weekend isn’t the best time to schedule a movie release, but according to Deadline, Shang-Chi posted a solid $8.8 million on its opening night Thursday. Those numbers are even higher than the Thursday night release of F9 back in June, which made $7.1 million in the first night and $70 million over the weekend.

So far, the highest Thursday night release since the pandemic hit was Black Widow, which made $13.2 million at the box office. It’s not surprising that Black Widow was so successful in its first evening, considering the movie had been long-awaited and featured an MCU character that audiences were very familiar with.

But even though Black Widow made more on its first night, Shang-Chi is set up to hit some big records. The highest-grossing Labor Day weekend at the box office was for 2007’s Halloween, which made $30.6 million over four days. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is estimated to make between $90-$100 million, which will shatter the previous record.

Ultimately, if Shang-Chi makes that $90 million goal, it will have the highest-grossing weekend at the box office since the pandemic. (Black Widow currently holds that title with $80.3 million.) And even by pre-pandemic standards, this movie is poised to do very well, especially with a release scheduled for Labor Day!
