5 Illegal Things You’re Still Doing at Disney World Hotels (And Everyone Hopes You’ll Stop)

When it comes to staying at a Walt Disney World hotel, there are a litany of rules — some official, some unwritten — that a guest needs to follow.

Following these rules isn’t only important for guests to improve their own trips, but it’s also imperative so as not to negatively impact the vacations of guests around them.

Not Parking Correctly

So, let’s talk Disney hotel parking. Technically speaking, according to Disney’s rules, “Standard self-parking is complimentary for day Guests while they enjoy select dining, shopping, entertainment, and recreation experiences at Disney Resort hotels.” That being said, Disney does prioritize guests staying at their resorts when it comes to parking, so if you’re just visiting, you may not be able to park unless you have a dining reservation.

Now, Disney does play around with these rules from time to time — back in 2025, for example, the company announced that those who wanted to visit one of the venues at the Polynesian that don’t take reservations, such as Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto, could park in the hotel’s lot, but only after 2:00 PM. Also, during certain times of the year, enforcement of any parking rules may be a bit lax at most resorts.

Crowding Major Dates Without a Reservation

Under normal circumstances, Disney guests can visit the public areas of any Disney hotel property. However, that’s not always the case. For example, let’s say you wanted to see the Magic Kingdom’s fireworks from the beach at the Polynesian. Normally, this would be totally permissible.

However, on major holidays like the 4th of July or New Year’s Eve, Disney reserves the beach exclusively for guests of the Polynesian. Similar setups are common at other popular viewing points at hotels near the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT as well.

Pool Hopping

In general, pool hopping is NOT allowed at Walt Disney World. Now, there are a couple of slight exceptions (for example, guests staying at Disney’s Contemporary Resort can use the pool at Bay Lake Tower, and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort can use the Cove Pool over at Island Tower, and vice versa to both,) but in general guests are ONLY allowed to use the pools at hotels they’re registered at. This includes Disney resorts that are close together, like Pop Century or Art of Animation, or those connected by the Skyliner or Monorail.

Balloons at Animal Kingdom Lodge

Like its namesake theme park, Animal Kingdom Lodge doesn’t allow balloons due to safety concerns for the animals on property. That means guests staying at the lodge can’t bring balloons back from Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, or Hollywood Studios.

Smoking/Vaping Outside of Designated Areas

So, this one may seem obvious, but smoking – whether traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes, or etc. – is ONLY allowed in designated areas at Walt Disney World resorts, and most spaces (including guest rooms) are non-smoking. Yes, that includes all kinds of vapes, and no, you won’t be able to hide the smell.
