Universal’s UK theme park has been the subject of growing conversation for quite some time, especially as the company continues to expand its global footprint. While fans have been watching Universal move full steam ahead with projects like Epic Universe, which just debuted in Florida earlier this year, and its upcoming Universal Kids Resort in Texas, questions about when or if a European park would become a reality have lingered. Now, after months of speculation and behind-the-scenes planning, a major update has finally arrived — and it signals that Universal’s long-discussed UK theme park is officially taking a significant step forward.

After years of speculation and planning, Universal Destinations & Experiences has cleared a major hurdle in bringing its first European theme park and resort to life — and it’s a milestone that could reshape the UK’s tourism landscape. According to a post shared by Scott Gustin, the UK government has officially granted planning permission for the long-anticipated Universal Studios UK project in Bedford. This marks a significant advancement for what will be one of Europe’s most ambitious entertainment developments.

The approval, granted through a Special Development Order (SDO) by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, means Universal can now move forward with early site preparation and detailed design work for the multi-billion-pound Universal United Kingdom Resort. Unlike standard local planning procedures, an SDO allows the government to fast-track major developments of national significance, which is a sign of how strongly the UK is backing the project.

The planned site, located on the former Kempston Hardwick brickworks just south of Bedford, will transform nearly 500 acres into a world-class entertainment resort featuring themed lands, visitor accommodation, dining, retail, and more. While Universal hasn’t officially confirmed specific themes for this park yet, earlier projections suggested the park could rival Europe’s biggest attractions with immersive experiences tied to the company’s iconic film and franchise portfolio (trust us, they’ve got more than enough IP to pull from!)

Officials estimate the project could generate an estimated £50 billion in economic impact over the coming decades and create thousands of jobs both during construction and once the resort is operational. The government and local councils have emphasized the transformative potential this project holds for Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, and the broader UK tourism market.

That’s not to say Universal’s completely in the clear juuust yet to start moving dirt. Further steps remain, including a statutory parliamentary review period before the planning order comes into force in January 2026. However, this approval represents a major leap forward in the timeline for Universal’s first European resort.

For theme park fans and UK visitors alike, this marks an exciting moment. Universal’s move into Europe has long been anticipated, and with planning permission now secured, the journey toward a brand-new destination resort in Bedford is officially underway.
