We’ve been wondering for a while now if The Simpsons land in Universal Studios in Universal Orlando would close to make way for something new, as the IP is now owned by Disney rather than Universal, but there’s been no news on that yet (however, the agreement that Universal can license this IP in their parks lasts through 2028, so we’ll have to see). However, if you’re a fan of the iconic yellow family, we’ve got amazing news — a new movie is coming in 2027!

Variety has reported that a new Simpsons movie, called The Simpsons 2, will come to theaters on July 23rd, 2027, 20 years after their original theatrical debut! The film has taken the spot of an untitled Marvel film, which has now been removed from the schedule. There will no longer be a new comic book installment between Avengers: Doomsday on December 18th, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17th, 2027, as of now.

The poster for the new film was shared on Instagram with the caption, “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” No plot details have been announced for the film at this time, but we’ll be keeping a close eye out for them.

In case you’re not super familiar with this iconic show, “The Simpsons” was created by Matt Groening and is the longest-running animated series and sitcom on television. It’s most recently been renewed through its 40th season, which will air between 2028 and 2029. The show is set in the fictional town of Springfield and follows the Simpson family, made up of Homer (Dad), Marge (Mom), and kids Bart, Lisa, and baby Maggie.

The Simpsons Movie was released in theaters in July 2007 and was a massive success, bringing in $536 million at the global box office with only a $75 million budget. The film followed “Springfield being confined under a massive glass dome after Homer accidentally polluted the town’s lake.” A sequel to the film has been mentioned for years, but this is the first time we’re really seeing forward movement on it. According to “The Simpsons” showrunner Matt Selman, streaming has really helped the show stay relevant and popular, likely leading to the movie’s greenlight, even two decades later.
