'Lilo & Stitch' Director Responds To Fans Over Live-Action Movie Changes: "I Tried"

Stitch is ready to hit the big screen again, and the new Lilo and Stitch live-action movie will be released in theaters on May 23rd.

While we’re excited for our favorite alien to have a new movie, it’s hard for a live-action film not to be compared to the original cartoon. The live-action Snow White movie proved this, as many fans were upset about the changes from the cartoon, including different outfits, storylines, and songs. Stitch is known to cause chaos and might be causing a bit more than he expected.

Many Lilo and Stitch fans are upset about one character, Pleakley.

Pleakley is known for wearing different disguises throughout the cartoon to look more like a human and not an alien while sneaking around to catch Stitch after he escapes. In the cartoon, Pleakley dresses up in wigs and dresses, which fans thought was a large part of the fun of his character.

The film’s director, Dan Fleischer Camp, responded on TikTok when one person commented, “How dare they ruin Pleakley’s disguise like that?”

In the TikTok response, Camp was very clear that he tried to have Pleakley wear a dress and even showed concept art of the live-action Pleakley in a dress. While this didn’t make it into the final cut, the director is still very passionate about the idea and just as disappointed as we are that it didn’t make it to the screen.

There seems to always be controversy around Disney movies, especially the live-action ones. One positive is that the film is bringing the original voice of Stitch, Chris Sanders, back for the live-action! Sanders was also the original animator for Stitch, so it wouldn’t be a Lilo and Stitch movie without him.
