When we say “Disney World” what comes to mind?
For many people the first thing that pops up are all the amazing rides. For others, they’re thinking solely about the food. Others still can’t stop thinking about all the live shows. That has us thinking about the things people actually get wrong about Disney World, so we thought we’d reach out to you and get your takes on the issue. Well, we asked, and you delivered!
We reached out to our followers on Facebook and Instagram to ask: “What do you think 99% of people get WRONG about Disney World?” We had quite a few people leave their opinions in the comments!
Now, let’s go over your top responses!
It’s Just for Kids
First up, one of the biggest myths out there is that Disney World is just for kids. The VAST majority of you were here to set the record straight.
For example, AE reader Shawn put it perfectly, saying, “That it’s just for kids. WDW has something for everyone to enjoy.” Christa chimed in, “That you need to bring kids.” And Michelle agreed, “That it’s for kids.” Even Gary shared, “It’s only for kids. I used to have that way of thinking but luckily I overcame that and now have an addiction.” Same, Gary, same.
You Don’t Need to Plan
Next up we’ve got one that we all made as first-time visitors. We all thought we could just stroll into any one of the four parks, hop on a few rides, and call it a day? Well, good luck with that.
To that point, Mariana shared, “That you will be able to do it all without prioritizing or having some sort of plan.” Cameron added, “That it’s a fly by night kind of experience. A lot of planning goes into having a truly memorable experience. In my opinion.” He’s not wrong. Disney World is massive, and there’s so much to do that going in without a plan can be overwhelming.
Jody echoed that with, “That no planning is needed😂. Walt Disney World is huge!! You should plan your park days, choose your top ten in each park, plan your dining and your down time. Don’t over book and leave room for surprise things along the way. 😊” Dave added, “You need a plan. Plan out your first couple hours, then go with the flow.”
You Can Do It All in One Trip
Oh, wouldn’t it be nice if this one was true. The fact is that Disney World is huge, and there’s no way you can do everything in one trip (unless you’ve got, like, a month to spare).
Staci pointed, “People thinking they can do too much (especially with littles) than they can.” Cassandra added, “That you can do everything in one trip. It’s really hard to do everything during the avg trip length (like 1 week). Rides are also closed for refurbishment on a rotating basis, so there’s a good chance you won’t do it all in one trip.”
Renee mentioned, “You can do everything in one week! Not true! In order to actually enjoy your vacation, lower your expectations about what can be done. And then, at the end of the week, plan your next trip.” I mean, let’s face it. One trip to Disney World is never enough!
The Size of Disney World
Here’s another thing that totally throws first-timers off: The sheer size of Disney World. To that point, Cathy summed it up in four words: “The size of it all.” Disney World isn’t just one park; it’s four theme parks, two water parks, a shopping district, tons of hotels, and so much more.
Melissa shared, “The size of it! I see so many first timers posting their plans and it’s like: Going to hit Magic Kingdom for rope drop, then head to Cape May character breakfast around 10:00, then head back to MK for a few more rides, then go to The Boathouse for lunch, rest at resort then make the 12:00 Lion King Show followed by an afternoon of swimming at Typhoon Lagoon.”
Laura echoed with, “I think most people have trouble anticipating the amount of time travel time spent within Disney World. I’ve been guilty of it myself at times, making a dining reservation at Wilderness Lodge, and having to catch a boat or bus at just the right moment from Magic Kingdom to get there on time. It’s always a good idea to allow for a full hour of travel time between the parks and resort hotels. The addition of the Skyliner does alleviate some of the travel time stress to/from Hollywood Studios though.”

I’d agree with 3 out of 4 of these with the exception being “You Can Do It All in One Trip”.
The ONLY reason I’d disagree with that is that having travelled as a family over 8,000 miles (from Wellington, New Zealand), we had no option but to do it (and Universal) in one trip!
My terms and conditions for one time trippers would be:
1) PLAN for AT LEAST a 14 day trip
2) Do your research (thanks All Ears – and others)
3) DON’T think you’ll be able to do everything (there are NO “must do’s” just preferences)
If anybody ever asks if it was worth the money you spent, it’s the wrong question. The right question is “Do you regret the money you spent)
