The Genie+ system is getting some big changes soon!

Disney recently announced that Genie+ will be replaced by Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass beginning July 24th, 2024. The announcement came with lots of information about this new system, but there is also still lots of questions.
There are similarities between the current Genie+ system and the newly introduced Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass system, however, there are also quite a few differences that are leaving some Disney World fans confused. While we won’t know the answers to many questions and what we do know is always subject to change, let’s dive into a few points of confusion and explain what we know so far.
What are Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass?
To start off, the most basic question of what exactly are Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass? These two systems will be replacing the old Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane services beginning July 24th, 2024. One of the biggest differences is that the new Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass services will allow you the ability to make your selections before you arrive.

With the Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you will be able to make up to three selections before you arrive at the park. Once you redeem one of the selections, you will be able to choose another option. That means you will be able to hold three selections at a time, and as you use each selection, you can choose another option.
What Are Some of the Specifics?
When you are making your selections ahead of time, there will be two different tiers at each park. You will be able to make one selection from the top tier, and two or three selections from the bottom tier. The top tier includes some of the more popular rides in each park. For example, at EPCOT, Frozen Ever After, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, and Soarin’ Around the World are all in the top tier. When you are booking ahead of time, you will only be able to choose one of those attractions. Once you are in the parks and have redeemed your first selection, you will be able to choose from any of the attractions included with Lightning Lane Multi Pass. The only exception to this is Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where you can select from any attraction (besides Avatar Flight of Passage which will require a Lightning Lane Single Pass.)

The Lightning Lane Single Pass will be very similar to the current Individual Lightning Lane. It is a separate purchase for the most popular rides in each park. Currently, the following attractions are a part of the Lightning Lane Single Pass system: Tron Lightcycle / Run, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and Avatar Flight of Passage. You will be able to purchase up to two single passes per day. The only way to utilize the lightning lane for these attractions will be through purchasing a Lightning Lane Single Pass.

Alright, we have gone over the basics of this new system, but we are sure there are still lots of questions. We will try our best to answer some of the most common questions, but keep in mind that the systems will likely experience some changes as they are rolled out.
When Can You Purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass?
If you are staying at a Disney Resort hotel or other select hotels, you will be able to purchase the passes 7 days in advance of your resort check-in day. All other guests will be able to purchase beginning 3 days in advance of their park visit. You will be able to purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass beginning at 7AM ET either 7 days or 3 days in advance of your park visit.

What Do You Need to Do To Purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Single Pass?
Prior to the time when you can make selections in advance, make sure you have the My Disney Experience app downloaded and you are connected with your entire travel party on the “Family & Friends List.” Then beginning at 7AM ET, you will log-on to the app and begin making your selections for your party.

When Can You Make Another Selection?
Once you have redeemed a Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you will be eligible to make another selection. You can hold up to three Lightning Lane Multi Passes at a time.
Can You Book Selections at More Than One Park?
Yes and no. When you make your initial selections in advance, you will only be able to make selections at one park. However, once you have redeemed a Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and you have a park hopper ticket, you will be able to book your next selection at any of the theme parks.

Can You Modify Your Selections?
Yes. You can head back into the My Disney Experience app at any point after you have completed your purchase to modify your selections. This can include modifying the time of your selection, or choosing a completely different attraction instead.
Can Different Members Book Different Options?
When you are making your initial selections for the Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you will need to make the same selection for all members of your travel party. However, once you have completed the purchase you will be able to go back in and modify your selections. That means that different members of you party will be able to choose different attractions to experience if they want.

When Can You Book If You Arrive Close to July 24th, 2024?
We reached out to confirm when guests will be able to book the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass options if they are arriving around July 24th. While it is subject to change, currently, the system will go into effect on July 24th and that will be the first day that the new system will be available. If you are planning on heading to the parks on July 24th, you will not be able to make your selections until 7AM ET the morning of July 24th. If you are headed to the parks on July 25th, you will need to log-in to the My Disney Experience app beginning at 7AM ET on July 24th as well. That means that a large number of people will likely be logging onto the app on the morning of July 24th, so we may see some congestion on the app.

How Much Will Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass cost?
Exact pricing will not be available until July 24th, 2024, but we do know that the prices for Lightning Lane Multi Pass will vary by date and theme park. Lightning Lane Single Pass will vary based on date and attraction.
Will Park Hopping Cost Extra?
So far, the ability to book Lightning Lane Multi Pass selections in numerous parks will not cost extra. You will purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass ahead of time for your first park of the day and will pay the price for that park. As long as you have a park hopper ticket, you will be able to begin making selections in any theme park after you have redeemed your first Lightning Lane Multi Pass selection. Currently, Genie+ has options for Single Park or Multi Park, but so far it sounds like Lightning Lane Multi Pass will just be based on your first park of the day.

Can You Purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass at the same time?
When it is your time to make your selections, you will be able to make all of your group’s initial selection for each day in one go. This includes both Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass. You can make up to three Lightning Lane Multi Pass selections, and purchase up to two Lightning Lane Single Passes per day.

If You Book 3 Lightning Lanes Ahead of Time in the Evening, Do You Have to Wait To Redeem Your First One Before Booking Another?
So far, the answer is yes. You will only be able to make another Lightning Lane selection once you redeem one of your selections. Genie+ currently allows you to book another selection two hours after you make the selection OR once you redeem it, whichever one happens first. However, with the new Lightning Lane Multi Pass it sounds like you will only be able to make another selection once you redeem a Lightning Lane.
Can You Schedule Overlapping Lightning Lanes?
We don’t currently know for sure, but it does look like the app will provide you with information about your current plans (other Lightning Lanes, dining reservations, etc.) to help you with making your selections.

As we get closer to the launch of this new system, we are sure there will be lots more questions and even changes to the system. The Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass system will require some effort to get used to, and we will definitely be finding things out along the way.
