Fired actress Gina Carano just filed a lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm, and X (Twitter) CEO Elon Musk is footing some of the legal bills.
Yep. That’s a LOT of well-known names in one sentence, so let’s break down what’s happening with this unusual situation.
Back in 2021, Carano was fired from her role as Cara Dune on The Mandalorian. Carano is outspoken about her conservative political beliefs. She spoke out against mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic, and falsely stated that voter fraud happened during the 2020 Presidential election. Prior to her firing, Carano had shared a social media post implying that being a Republican is like being Jewish during the Holocaust.
Now, Carano has sued Disney and Lucasfilm for wrongful termination and discrimination. She is asking the court to order Lucasfilm to re-cast her. Carano claims that she was fired for her cultural and religious beliefs. She says she was harassed by the companies and expected to conform to their beliefs on Black Lives Matter, personal pronouns, and false claims of election interference. What’s more, Carano says that her male co-stars — who she accuses of making offensive posts directed toward Republicans — were treated differently.
So, where does Elon Musk come into this story? Well, Musk tweeted a few months ago that he would offer legal representation to people who were fired for things they said on his X social media platform (formerly known as Twitter). “To my surprise, a few months ago I received an email from a lawyer who had been hired by X to look into my story & many others. Turns out after sending them as much information as I could gather these past few months, my now lawyers & X believe whole-heartedly in my case & are moving forward,” Carano said in a tweet.
