Whew! It’s amazing how much can happen in a few short months. If only all those ongoing Disney World construction projects could move as quickly as some of the breaking news we’ve seen recently. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Speaking of breaking news and big projects, do you have August 9th marked on your calendar? It’s the date of Disney’s Q3 earnings call. Disney CEO Bob Iger has a LOT to cover, and we’ll likely hear from a new executive, so we’re expecting some big news come August 9th. What’s at stake during the earnings call, and what might we learn? Let’s discuss!
New CFO
Back in June, Disney’s longtime Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy announced that she would be stepping down from her role and taking a family medical leave of absence.

Then, on July 1st, Kevin Lansberry took over the role as the Interim CFO. Before taking over for McCarthy, Lansberry was the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.

Now, the Q3 earnings call will be the first time many Disney fans hear from the new CFO. In past earnings call meetings, Christine McCarthy often commented on a variety of topics from a financial standpoint and answered questions about the company’s budgets. We’ll have to wait and see what Lansberry brings to the Q3 earnings call.
What Kind of News Could We Get?
So, what kind of big news might we get on August 9th? Here are just a few things we may see:
Disney+ — We can count on hearing some Disney+/direct-to-consumer updates this month. In previous earnings call reports, Disney has shared its current Disney+ subscriber numbers, which have been a little all over the place.

Disney+ had 157.8 million subscribers when we last heard on April 1st, down from 161.8 million subscribers in December 2022. Will we see the Disney+ subscriber count continue to fall? We’ll have to wait and see!

Revenue — We also expect to see some additional updates on other financial aspects of the Company. For example, we’re expecting Disney executives to comment on the revenue coming from the Parks, Experiences, and Products division. Following an unusually slow summer, it will be interesting to see how much money the company made despite comparatively smaller crowds this year.

SAG-AFTRA/Writers Strike — Hollywood is currently at a standstill as both actors and writers are on strike. Notably, Bob Iger commented on the possibility of a strike, stating, “This is the worst time to add to that disruption.”

We’re expecting Disney to face some serious questions regarding the strike.
Political Conflict — Additionally, Disney is juggling two lawsuits (one filed by The Walt Disney Company, one filed by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District) and is in the middle of an ongoing political conflict with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Could Disney address the ongoing political conflict? We’ll have to wait and see.
Iger’s contract extended — On July 12th, Disney announced that Bob Iger agreed to stay on as the company’s CEO through December 31st, 2026 –about two years longer than he originally planned. This will be Iger’s first earnings call since announcing his extended contract, but it remains to be seen if Iger will comment on the decision.

We may also learn more from any questions or comments regarding Park Passes, Genie+, upcoming film releases, or new attractions coming to the Disney parks. We’ll be covering everything you need to know about the results of the earnings report and sharing any comments made during the earnings call. In the meantime, we’re always on the lookout for the latest Disney news, so stay tuned for more.
