The Walt Disney Company Takes Home Six Academy Awards

It’s been quite an exciting year for Disney films!

From Encanto to West Side Story, the Walt Disney Company scored 23 Academy Award nominations across the various production companies it operates. Last night, movie buffs all across the globe tuned in to see who would take home the coveted golden statues, and we’re taking a look at Disney’s six wins!

For a song called, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, we certainly talk about Bruno a lot — and it seems like the Academy had been chatting about Encanto non-stop as well, because it took home the award for Best Animated Feature Film.

The award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role went to Ariana DeBose, for her portrayal of Anita in West Side Story. DeBose is the first Afro-Latina and openly queer woman of color to win this award.

Disney’s Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) won the Oscar for Best Documentary Film. This film is the directorial debut from Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, and follows the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival which celebrated Black history, culture, music, and fashion.

Jessica Chastain took home the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for her performance as Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

And who could forget the incredible costumes we saw in Cruella?! This Disney villain origin story was a fashion show in and of itself, earning iconic costume designer Jenny Beavan the award for Best Costume Design.
