All right — who’s NOT talking about Bruno right now?

Disney’s Encanto debuted in theaters on November 24th, and later premiered on Disney+ on December 24th. Since then, the soundtrack has been picking up a lot of steam, with some songs even placing high on U.S. and global music charts! Have you been listening to the soundtrack on repeat too?
Variety reports that the Encanto soundtrack jumped from number 110 on the Billboard charts to number 7 last week, only to become the number 1 soundtrack on the charts this week! It’s also currently the number 1 album on Apple Music and iTunes, with “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” topping the Spotify Top 50 Viral Chart. Since December 28th, “Bruno” has also become the number 1 trending music video!

And it’s not just the soundtrack that’s trending! At the time of writing, on the Apple Music Top 100 Songs in the U.S. Chart, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” currently sits at number 7, while another favorite Encanto song, “Surface Pressure,” now sits at number 13.

So what’s going on? The sudden rise of Encanto popularity is likely due to the film now streaming on Disney+, allowing more people access to the film, as well as trending on social media platforms such as TikTok. Encanto is Disney’s 60th feature film, with Lin-Manual Miranda having written eight of the original songs. Lin-Manuel Miranda is known for Hamilton and many other musical achievements, including the soundtrack of Moana, which has also broken records in the past.

Interestingly, Variety reports that Disney submitted not “Bruno” or “Pressure” for the 94th Oscars “Best Original Song,” but “Dos Oruguitas,” which is the emotional song about Abuela’s past. If it wins, Lin-Manuel Miranda will finally be an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) award winner.

Update: Since writing, People has reported that Encanto just hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 Chart, succeeding Adele’s new album 30. Encanto is the first soundtrack to achieve this feat in two years.
Encanto is now among five other film soundtracks that have reached the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200 Chart, including The Lion King, Pocahontas, Frozen, Frozen II, and Curious George.
