It’s been a pretty big summer for releases as Disney has debuted Cruella, Pixar has premiered Luca, and Marvel has wrapped up Loki on Disney+.
However, one of the most anticipated releases has been Marvel’s Black Widow, as excited fans have watched the film both in theaters and through streaming services. But, there’s a new box office king in movie theaters now!
Variety has noted that Warner Bros. Pictures’ Space Jam: A New Legacy has brought in $31.6 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend in theaters! The revenue for the 1996 Space Jam sequel has claimed the top box office spot, surpassing Black Widow‘s earnings of $26.3 million during its second weekend the past few days.
Although the film had low projections at only $20 million during its first three days in theaters, families were excited to head to the movies to watch Space Jam: A New Legacy. The live-action and animated picture is also available for free on HBO Max for subscribers. However, moviegoers weren’t just families as 53% of the ticket buyers were male and 52% were under the age of 25.
Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution, stated that the popularity was majorly due to advertisement. He noted, “The marketing on this movie really looked fun, and it helped alert audiences everywhere.” David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, also praised the film’s opening by saying “This weekend is a positive indication that the family audience is alive, well and, according to ‘Space Jam 2’s’ enthusiastic audience scores, still thrilled by the big screen.”
The international box office for Space Jam: A New Legacy also earned $23 million from 64 overseas markets to boost its global revenue to $54.6 million. Compared to Marvel’s box office hit, Black Widow has seen a 67% decline of inaugural sales in domestic theaters this past weekend. So far, the film has earned $131 million in North America and $264 million globally.
We’ll have to keep an eye on the upcoming theatrical releases and their box office revenues moving forward! And, you can stay tuned with All Ears for the latest entertainment and news coming soon!
